the perfect tense
• The perfect tense is used to talk about the past.
• The perfect tense has two parts:
1) an HELPING VERB called auxiliary. It is the relevant part of the
verb avoir:
AVOIR
J’ai
Tu as
Il/elle/on a
Nous avons
Vous avez
Ils/ elles ont

2) A PAST PARTICIPLE. There are formed from the infinitive of
the verb. They fall into 4 different groups:
1. -er verbs replace –er with –é j’ai regardé
2. -ir verbs replace –ir with –i j’ai fini
3. -re verbs replace –re with –u j’ai attendu
4. Some verbs have irregular past participles like:
Faire – j’ai fait
Voir – j’ai vu
Lire – j’ai lu
3. Write each verb in the perfect tense.
For each one, you need part of avoir
and the correct past participle.
