ο The School District Demographics System
(SDDS) Goes Mobile!
ο Introduction
ο Overview of Mobile Computing
ο Brief Overview of new technologies incorporated in
Mobile Map Viewer
ο Live Demonstration of Mobile Map Viewer
ο Summary/Q & A
3. INTRODUCTION
ο Mobile devices are
revolutionizing the way our
nation consumes information.
ο The School District
Demographics System (SDDS)
map viewer is now available
for use on tablet devices(iPad
and Android).
ο This session presents an
overview of current efforts to
bring the SDDS to mobile
devices and some technology
incorporated into it.
4. MOBILE COMPUTING
ο Mobile Computing
has been growing
exponentially over the
past few years.
ο More and more people
are turning to mobile
devices to accomplish
their daily tasks.
ο Wi-Fi, 3g, 4g, and
other networks provide
access to information
any time anywhere in
the world.
5. WHY ARE MOBILE DEVICES SO POPULAR?
ο The ability to
access information
in an instant.
ο You can also
access some of
your home and or
work files by using
cloud storage or
remote desktop.
ο They are just plain
fun.
6. STATISTICS ABOUT MOBILE DEVICES
ο Byearly 2012, users began ditching their
feature phones and purchasing smart phones.
9. WHAT ARE THEY USING THEM FOR
ο Huge increases in health information and general
reference as userβs perform more research on mobile
devices.
10. BIG NAMES IN MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
ο TheTwo that are
used the Most
ο Apple
ο iOS 5.1
ο iPad & iPhone
ο Android
ο Ice Cream
Sandwich
ο Jelly Bean
ο Large Selection of
devices
13. WHY IS MOBILE SO IMPORTANT?
ο By 2015, the majority of internet access will be
done from some sort of mobile device instead of a
PC.
14. MOBILE DEVICES COMPARED TO PCβS
ο This chart shows the difference in slope between PCβs
sales and mobile device sales.
15. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
ο We are in a mobile digital world now days.
ο Businesses and websites need to change and
adapt to how consumers are using the internet
16. ADAPTING TO THIS MOBILE WORLD
ο Build mobile friendly
website
ο Build Native application
ο iOS β Objective-C
ο Android - Java
ο iOS/Android - HTML5/PhoneGap
ο Build a universal web
application
ο Uses HTML5 and JavaScript
which is supported on desktop
computers, tablet devices, and
smartphones
17. GOOD EXAMPLES
ο Some websites that are mobile friendly
ο FEMA
ο www.fema.gov
ο m.fema.gov
ο EPA
ο www.epa.gov
ο m.epa.gov
ο Smithsonian
ο www.gosmithsonian.com
ο State Government
ο http://georgia.gov/
ο NCES

20. THE SDDS MOBILE MAP VIEWER
ο http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/sdds/ed/mobile/
ο Shows new data sets.
21. THE SDDS MOBILE MAP VIEWER
ο Data can be viewed on the National level and
on the State level
22. TECHNOLOGY USED IN THE MOBILE MAP VIEWER
ο Web friendly HTML: runs on both desktop and mobile browsers
ο System is deployed on Amazon EC2 Cloud Servers (Part of the Geocloud
program)
ο Latest Esri Technologies:
ο JavaScript API version 3.0
ο ArcGIS Server 10.1 β released June 12, 2012
23. TECHNOLOGY USED IN THE MOBILE MAP VIEWER
ο Uses retina-quality
images that look good
on a regular tablet and
look good on the new
retina-display iPad.
ο Since this web app
was written with
HTML5, JavaScript,
and CSS, it will run on
any 10β tablet device
that supports
JavaScript.
24. WHAT THIS TECHNOLOGY MEANS FOR THE USER?
ο Since it is using the
newest ArcGIS
Server, 10.1, it
allows for a lot of the
applications work to
be done on the
server and not on
the actual device.
25. WHAT THIS TECHNOLOGY MEANS FOR YOU?
ο You can select different ways to distribute the data
to help you see the differences between school
districts, counties, and states all with the touch of a
button.
26. WHAT THIS TECHNOLOGY MEANS FOR YOU?
ο Mobile SDDS offers five new base maps from ArcGIS.com
27. WHAT THIS TECHNOLOGY MEANS FOR THE USER?
ο You can add optional layers to see even more data by
simply selecting a checkbox.
New Optional
Layers
28. WHAT THIS TECHNOLOGY MEANS FOR THE USER?
ο Has the ability to be saved to the users home screen so
they can view it in full screen as if it were a native
application.
29. NEXT STEPS
ο Continuing development on Mobile Map Viewer
ο Working to insure the map stays up to date with all the latest
data

What this does is instead of the mobile device doing all the work, a powerful server somewhere else does the work and just hands it down to the device, which results in a incredibly fast and responsive application.
