2. Early History of Jean de Brebeuf Jean de Brebeuf was born March 25, 1593 and died March 16, 1649. Brebeuf was a Jesuit missionary and was killed in Canada. He was of French decent and sailed over to Canada on a missionary. In 1622, he was ordained as a priest. “He is more noteworthy as a close observer of Huron culture” (Greer 37). He caused a split between the European and Huron society.
3. Huron Brebeuf spent most of his life living among the Hurons. He lived among the Hurons between 1626-1629. He had learned all of the native ways. Brebeuf also wrote many journals of his life within the Huron community.
4. Martyrdom The Iroquois had begun their war with the Huron. In 1648, they destroyed the village. In 1649, the Iroquios captured the mission of St. Ignace and then eventually captured Brebeuf and his friend, Gabriel Lallement Brebeuf became the second patron saint in Canada and was canonized in 1930.
