Religious music of the lowlands of Luzon reveals the impact of Spanish Colonization to the
Philippines
Introduction of Christianity came the different Western forms of music that are used for religious
rites
Some of these are adapted by Filipino musicians to suit Philippine culture and traditions
- (i,e. Music used for Salubong, Senakulo, Santacruzan, Flores De Mayo) at the same time,
Some indigenous Philippine musical forms were incorporated to the Christian practices

• Liturgical music originated as
a part of religious ceremony.
• Liturgical music is well known
as a part of Catholic Mass.
12. THE MASS
• "Mass" is one of the names by which the sacrament of
the Eucharist is commonly called in the Roman Catholic
Church.
• The term "Mass" is derived from the Late Latin word
missa (dismissal), a word used in the concluding formula
of Mass in Latin

• It is traditionally performed on a proscenium-type stage

the Passion, Death,
and Resurrection of Jesus Christ in
a form of song with a dramatic

• It is a book of stanza of five lines

18. The Pasyón (Spanish: Pasión)
•The whole text is chanted and known as “Pabasa”
and is recited during Holy Week (Semana Santa)
•The entirety of the text is chanted during
the Lenten season and particularly Holy Week,
and is a popular Filipino Catholic devotion.

20. • It is an Easter Sunday pre-dawn ritual that reenacts the Risen Christ's
meeting with His mother.
• It is performed in the churchyard under a specially prepared arch where
the veiled image of the Virgin Mary has been placed.
• A child dressed as an angel is lowered by ropes from a high platform to
lift the mourning veil of the grieving Mother while other children dressed
in angel costumes sing the “Regina Coeli Laetare” meaning “Queen of
Heaven”.
• The church bells are rung to signify the end of Virgin Mary’s mourning
for Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead.

segregated by gender. The men and boys
follow the image of Jesus Christ, while

•The name of the festival is derived from
the Spanish language word flores meaning
"flowers". Other names are "Flores de María"
("Flowers of Mary") and "Álay" (Filipino for
"offering").

• It is a festival held in the Philippines in the month of
May.
• It is one of the May devotions to the Blessed Virgin
Mary and lasts for the entire month.
• It is held in the church or chapel wherein children offer
flowers to the image of the virgin Mary while singing
“Alay.”
