1. DIRECT SPEECH Direct speech or Quoted speech is the exact words someone said. For example: “I am afraid of UFOs,” he said. In this case are placed quotes.
2. REPORTED SPEECH Indirect speech or reported speech is the exact meaning of what someone said, but not the exact words. Doesn't use quotation marks to enclose what the person said and it doesn't have to be word for word. For example: He said (that) he was afraid of UFOs.
3. REPORTED SPEECH When reporting speech the tense usually changes. This is because when we use reported speech, we are usually talking about a time in the past (because obviously the person who spoke originally spoke in the past). The verbs therefore usually have to be in the past too.
4. Forexample: Directspeech: "I'm going to the cinema", he said. Indirectspeech He said he was going to the cinema.
5. You met Judy. Here are some of the thigs she said to you in direct speech: “My parents are very well” “I’m goig to learn to drive” “John has given up is job” “I can’t come to the party on Friday” “I want to go away for a holiday but I don’t know were to go” I am going away for a few days. I’ll phone you when I get back. Later you tell somebody what Judy said. You use reported speech: -Judy said that her parents were very well -She said that she was going to learn to drive. -She said that John had given up his job. -She said that she couldn’t come to the party on Friday -She said that she wanted to go away for a holiday but (she) didn’t know where to go. -She said that she was going away for a few days and would phone me when she got back.
6. When using indirect or reported speech, the form changes. Usually indirect speech is introduced by the verb said, as in I said, Bill said, or they said. Using the verb say in this tense, indicates that something was said in the past. In these cases, the main verb in the reported sentence is put in the past. If the main verb is already in a past tense, then the tense changes to another past tense; it can almost be seen as moving even further into the past.
7. Tense change As a rule when you report something someone has said you go back a tense: (the tense on the left changes to the tense on the right):
