Math Presentation...Let's Change the Way We Teach, So we Can Change the Way We Live
1. Teaching Math Beyond the
Curriculum
Teaching the Answer is Not the Answer
Brianne Ciarloni
2. Teaching the Answer is Not the Answer
Many students in the United States will tell you
that they are not good at and don’t like math.
Scores from our public schools across the
nation reflect this attitude
However, this is not the only variable that is
impacting students math scores
3. Teaching the Answer is Not the Answer
Cont.
Schools curriculum and strategies for teaching
math play a major role in students abilities in
math.
Dan Myers and Phil Daro both agree that one major
problem is that in our schools today we teach through
curriculum that teachers students how to get the
answer rather than the skills and mathematics needed
to solve.
4. Making the Change
We owe it to our kids to do better.
It is imperative that as a school we make
changes in our approach to teaching
mathematics to our students.
We need to start teaching the process of math
not simply answer getting.
5. How to do it….
Keep Math Current and Student Centered
Keep

math current and relevant for students
Present problems in a way that they can relate
Encourage students to use their prior knowledge
and intuition
Establish strategies for students to explore and
create ways to solve problems
Allow students opportunities to build the problem
Utilize multimedia to support
6. Teach strategies, then be less helpful
Teach
students to see and apply math in the
world around them
Teach students math initiative
Teach students the math and strategies
needed to solve…..then take a step back and
be a bit less helpful, allow them to solve on
their own
7. It’s in our hands now but will be in theirs
later
Right now it is our responsibility to make the
changes in how we teach math so that our
students can begin to understand and use
math differently.
It is in our hands, let’s make the best of it!!!
