Mnemonics reduce what we have to remember

• CAB (which used to be ABC)

Pump maintenance can also be a mnemonic

a pump that just one
day kept turning but
stopped working?

Clearances
Centrifugal pumps need tight clearances
Gaps between moving parts invite clogging
Recirculation cuts into pump efficiency
Energy generated
by the rotating
impeller has to be
directed or else it
will loop
An oversimplified view

Couplings need to be ultra-precise
V-belts can forgive, but not if they’re over-tight
Laser alignment
isn’t hard to do
Precision pump balancing reduces wear,
and every good pump spec admits it
Alignment issues grow with
(1) pump speeds and (2) pump sizes

Wear plates or wear rings
When they wear out…

• Recirculation increases
• Energy is wasted
• Solids get stuck

• Performance degrades
• Run times increase

• Pumps leak
• Pressure is lost
• Catastrophic failures occur
And also:
Not all castings are created equal

A problem in wastewater,
but a risk in potable water too
Tuberculated
pipes and
sedimentation
come for us all
Look in low-velocity spots
Look in low places
Abrasive wear looks different from cavitation
Suction-side cavitation
Discharge-side cavitation

Troubleshooting when problems arise
Most problems
can be traced back
to the CLAWS
Even pilots count on quick-reference guides
Quick answers are often bad
Practice finding good answers quickly
If it’s one problem, it’s often more than one
Misalignment leads to

Wear encourages problems
with solids
Clearance problems
accelerate wear
Solids can cause wear which
leads to clearance problems
Simplifying maintenance thinking helps
prevent catastrophic problems
But it only works if you put the idea to use!
