- The first ever Big West Rotaract Conf!How many of you have seen the Social Network? Seven years ago Harvard Connection…I mean The Facebook was just an idea of Mark Zuckerberg’s or the twins. Today, there are more than 500 million active users on Facebook. People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook. Social media is changing the way we interact with each other, companies talk with us and how government operates. The headquarters of most of these companies are within 50 miles of where we are standing. - 2009 was the year of Twitter. Ashton to people tweeting from the United Airlines plane. Reporters reading tweets. Tell how story about how MGN got a pothole tweet in March ’09 at Twitter headquarters. Asked is it possible to connect City govt’s 311 Call center to twitter. So people could report these issues to the city directly.
- Launched the country’s first govtTwitter-311 integration 3 months later in June ‘09! – Allows individuals to easily participate in making city better. Reducing costs too! Report out earlier this year, calls down to 311 center.Twitter is great and all – gives cable news something to talk about – On Twitter today so and so said…fill the hours
- In August ‘09 Launch DataSF with 100 datasets from police, public transportation to tree data – all in one spot Launch with Tim O’Reilly, tech community at Automatic hdqts with Matt Mullenweg150+ datasets – started with DC, we didn’t want to be left out!
- They’ll build the apps, all kinds of apps started coming out after we made our data public. San Francisco crime spotting is one of them.Much better than our SFPD had been able to do

- Talk about story to make muni data free.
- Talk about how couldn’t get 311 to build something to visualize what people calling 311 about. Tried for years. Two weeks after DataSF launch, Everyblock went live.If you login to MSNBC in San Francisco – scores of local data available through EveryBlock
- More than 50 Apps at last count….all kinds of stuff. Never imagined inside the walls of government.
- Some departments/agencies afraid. The data is yours. Last month Mayor Newsom introduced open data legislation to make it permanent – Announced at AppNation – he claimed foursquare got its start in SF. Legacy thing.Decided that all non-confidential data needs to be made available in machine readable format
- Save money, improve security – Craig Newmark and Tim 0’Reilly. Open community. More eyeballs on software. Quicker to market. More nimble.All facing tough budgetsOpen source software is created by the people for the people and as such is ideal for government.Encouraged depts, MGN led by example moved site over to WordPress. - The purpose of the COIT Software Evaluation policy is to ensure that all departments thoroughly and fairly evaluate software alternatives, including open source prior to acquiring new software. Policy adopted on Jan. 21, 2010The State of the Vermont adopted an open source policy on March 2, 2010

- As we have seen in the consumer marketplace, when companies like Google, Twitter, and Facebook release APIs (Application Programming Interface), countless innovative applications are created that build on the original idea.Lots of calls and media attention, “well this opengov stuff will only work in SF” Bull. Cities that sign onto the new national API allow apps to work any where.In March w Obama’s CIO, VivekKundra launch of the first national Open API.Pool resources with other cities. Save money.
- New way of thinking. New form of government. Just the start. Support from White House and media attention.
- API went live this summer, already 5 apps developed from start-ups CitySourcediPhone App – won TechCrunch 50 to Microsoft
- Not going to be easy. Ben Berkowitz is one of our partners from SeeClixFix.com. Developed much of what became the Open311 API. We met two years ago. Was trying to get our 311 team onboard then. They pushed back.
- The Open311 API went live 10 days ago. # of apps already out there
- City Camp SF CitizenSpace San Francisco 9-6 today!CityCamp is a global movement of informal conferences bringing together neighborhood and nonprofit leaders and activists, entrepreneurs and technology developers, new media and traditional journalists, and municipal employees to brainstorm, teach, learn and plan how to promote civic engagement and improve our cities with emerging technologies.
