Deep Reading

Brittany encourages deep reading of texts by posing
text-based questions to students after reading, and
helping them to develop strategies for going back
through the text as they look for evidence to
support their responses.
Students engage with
a rigorous text and
respond to text-based
questions.
Math Problem Solving
Brittany engages all students in math problem
solving activities that require perseverance in
working through multiple steps. Students are taught
the steps of problem solving that involve
determining what the question is, identifying given
information, missing information, developing a plan
for solving, and evaluating their solution.
STEM Instruction
Brittany incorporates STEM instruction and learning
as a way to challenge students. As planning for
the 2013/14 school year got under way, Brittany
proposed to her 1st grade team that they plan for
monthly STEM instruction. Her teammates were
quick to get on board with the idea and Brittany led
the way for planning activities and collecting needed
materials. 1st grade students love their STEM weeks
and have been applying cross-curricular knowledge
to real world scenarios.

STEM projects!

Goal Setting
Brittany works with
students to help them
develop challenging goals for
themselves. She discusses
their progress towards their
goals as they self-assess their
learning and behavior.
Having goals helps to
challenge students to do
their best and be successful
with rigorous
learning.
Maximizing Instructional Time
Brittany uses a variety of strategies to maximize
instructional time in her classroom, thus allowing
for deeper instruction to take place.

•Instructional materials are prepared before lessons
•Tools are easily accessible to students
•All classroom materials are clearly organized for
ease of use
•Utilization of parent volunteers as appropriate
•Students have a variety of jobs to help lead
their own learning and manage the classroom
environment
