The future of work is going to be more and more remote. In this context, managers need to know how to lead remote innovation teams, and people will also need to learn how to best work on remote teams.
But how do you train people to manage/participate in remote innovation teams? After reviewing hundreds of programs, we came to the conclusion what is really needed is a new type of program where managers learn by leading remote innovation teams. In addition to learnings by doing, we also concluded that the right program would need to teach specific remote management skills.
This presentation covers the work done in several innovation sprints to build what we believe will be one of the best programs to teach innovation management and certify students to participate in remote innovation teams.
2. My Talk …
1. A request “ Create a remote Innovation Management Program”
2. Should I ?
3. Could I ?
4. How could WE do it best ?
3. The Back Story
• An old guy leading innovation, very
human contact based.
• 3 experiences managing remote teams
with mixed results
• Then came Covid 19.
• Can you make your course into remote
innovation management course ?
4. Should I ?
• 8 Experts to investigate via a 3-week remote Sprint
(4 Innovation experts and 4 remote work experts)
Interaction is needed to spark ideas
and easier in person
Diversity is more important and it is
easier remotely
Remote = no trust
No Psychological safety
Some people happier and feel safer
collaborating remotely
Lack of attention when working
remotely
Easier to schedule things remotely
More deep thought
No good tools to work remotely Lot’s of good tools to work remotely
Remote will always be a second choice Remote is often better
Remote ExpertsTraditional Innovators
VS.
5. Results …
We agreed to disagree… 2 Innovation experts left the group
Conclusions of those that remained
1. The world is probably moving remote
2. Even if it doesn’t, remote is the torture test of Innovation
management
(so if you can teach remote they will be able to do anything)
Yes, I should look at teaching a course
6. Could I ?
• Were there good books ? Not really
• Do you need to know how to do
something to teach something ?
• Five 5-week sprints
1. Teaching V1
2. AI + Data analysis
3. Air Quality + probiotics
4. Jamaican prisoner rehab
5. Teaching V2 Learning by doing …
7. Results …
1. The books understate the challenge
2. Key learnings
• Preparation is key.
• The day before your sprint is the hardest day
• Deal with technology up-front
• Build skills before the work together
• Have a clear road map
• Day by day deliverables
• Build Rhythms and routines (daily stand-ups + live question board)
• Take time for the "soft stuff“
• Innovation + Management + Technology
• Mix fun with hard work
Yes, we (notice the change “I “to “we”) could teach this program
8. Our most important learning
The bicycle theory
Your can’t learn to ride a bike from a book or a course. You learn by doing
It is the same for management
9. How could we do it best ?
• 3 options
• An on-line course (90% don’t finish)
• A course with one of my universities (students
working in groups, but are they managing)
• A new type of learning by doing with
management of real teams (our choice)
• How real teams ?
• Groups of people from a company ( hard, also
not unique)
• Students (but issues of quality, structure,
processes)
10. Results …
• A student certification program
and a manager program
• A tough 5 intense day program for
students. (pass rate 40%)
• 5 weeks for managers, so there is
more time to learn, build, and test
ideas.
• Certified Interns skill matched
with companies
• A structured day by day (or
week by week) program
11. A win / win for everyone
• Students:
• Certification
• Internship / employment opportunities
• Long-term skills
• Managers:
• A focused approach deliver results
(do more in 5 weeks than they ever thought possible with a team that can
help)
• Students to hire for long-term positions
• Profound learning, tools, methods to keep things going
12. Next Steps
• The pilot student program = July 20
• Target 100 students
• Scholarships to attract best students (non scholarship €395)
• The manager program = August 17
• Target 10 companies
• Pricing 15K for 5 weeks with 5 interns (Vs. 1 week design sprints at 30
K)
The value proposition :
For companies: More than you even thought possible in 5 weeks
For managers: An MBA level program with tools and methods
