Country Background
The Philippines is defined by its emerald rice fields, teeming
megacities, graffiti-splashed jeepneys, smouldering volcanoes, bug-
eyed tarsiers, fuzzy water buffalo and smiling, happy- go-lucky
people.
The Philippines is a land apart from mainland Southeast Asia – not
only geographically but also spiritually and culturally. The country’s
overwhelming Catholicism, the result of 350 years of Spanish rule,
is its most obvious enigma. Vestiges of the Spanish era include
exuberant town fiestas (festivals) like Kalibo’s Ati-Atihan, unique
Spanish-Filipino colonial architecture, and exquisite, centuries-old
stone churches lording over bustling town plazas. Malls, fast-food
chains and widespread spoken English betray the influence
of Spain’s colonial successor, the Americans. Yet despite these
outside influences, the country remains very much its own unique
entity.
The people are, simply, Filipinos – and proud of it. Welcoming,
warm and relentlessly upbeat, it is they who captivate and
ultimately ensnare visitors.

Visa Information
Visa regulations in the Philippines are subject to change so be sure to check with a Philippine embassy
or consulate before making your travel plans.
Nationals from the vast majority of countries, including all ASEAN countries, can enter the Philippines
without a visa for a period not exceeding 21 days , as long as they have a return ticket, as well as
passports valid for a period of at least six months beyond the period of stay. Nationals
of Brazil and Israel may enter the Philippines without a visa for a stay not exceeding 59 days, while
holders of Hong Kong, British National (Overseas) and Macau passports, as well as Portuguese passports
issued in Macau, are allowed to stay in the Philippines without a visa not exceeding seven days.
Nationals of countries which are required to obtain a visa to enter the Philippines may obtain one upon
arrival under the Bureau of Immigration's Visa Upon Arrival Program (VUAP). Visas however must be
pre-arranged with the Bureau of Immigration prior to arriving in the Philippines.

Consulate in your country.

Currency
The unit of currency in the Philippines is the peso (P), which is also spelled piso in Filipino, and is
divided into 100 centavos (c). Banknotes come in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and
1000 pesos. Coins are in 10c and 25c pieces, and P1, P5 and P10.
The smartest way to bring cash to the Philippines is in the form of a credit card, cash card or debit
card. Provided you have your PIN, you can use these to get cash or cash advances from thousands of
banks and ATMs in the Philippines.

ATMs
Credit, debit and cash cards can be used to get cash or cash advances from thousands of ATMs
throughout the country. Check with your bank or credit-card company (or look on the back of your
card) to see which ATM network your card is connected to. For getting cash, Cirrus and Plus are the
most widely accepted; for cash advances, MasterCard is the most widely accepted, followed by Visa.
Cash advances from ATMs are in local currency, and may be subject to a daily withdrawal limit.
Metrobank and Equitable PCI ATMs have cash withdrawal limits of P4000 and P5000, respectively.
HSBC machines have no limits - you're only limited by your own bank's daily withdrawal limit.
Particularly in the big cities, ATMs operate 24 hours daily, and can be found in department stores,
supermarkets and shopping malls, in addition to banks. Note that ATMs in the Philippines have a
curious system of posting 'online' or 'offline' signs to indicate whether or not the machine is in
operation.
In 2010, Philippine banks started to charge ₱200 per transaction for using foreign cards in their ATM
machines, in addition to cash withdrawal and exchange fees already imposed by your bank.
Considering small transaction limits, this adds at least 2-4% to the amount withdrawn - thus, bringing
in cash and exchanging it to peso in the bank generally will be cheaper.
Cash
With the usual precautions, carrying cash (US dollars is the currency of choice) is no particular
problem; it's actually a good idea to have a US$50 and/or US$100 note stashed somewhere secure
and accessible in case you can't find a bank or an ATM, or you're out of traveller’s cheques.
As for pesos, 'Sorry, no change' becomes a familiar line - stock up on notes smaller than P100 at every
opportunity.

Money Changers
Moneychangers are usually easy to find in the commercial centres of Metro Manila; some department
stores and shopping malls also have moneychangers on the premises. Moneychangers usually offer
the best rates, but they are also notorious for all manner of short-change scams and rip-offs. Because
of the risk of rip-offs, it's best to use moneychangers selectively - if possible, change your cash or
travellers cheques at a bank, hotel or resort, even if the rate is usually lower than at a moneychanger.

Credit Cards
Many shops, restaurants, hotels and resorts in Metro Manila accept payment by plastic, and credit-
card.
A shop-front sign that reads 'Visa accepted' or 'MasterCard accepted' may well refer only to the
Philippines-issued version, so check with the shop personnel by showing them your card.

Reminders for First Time Tourists
1.  Always carry small change in Pesos, Coins & 20, 50 &100 notes. That saves you the annoyance
from the very common reply, "sorry no change".
2.  When getting a Taxi, never ask "How much?" before getting in because the driver might not use
the meter and give you an expensive fare. Always ensure that the Taxi driver uses the metre for
your travel. Flag down rate starts at Php 40.
3.  Never change money on the street nor inside a restaurant.
4.  Expect everything to be late and slow.
5.  Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s encouraged. Restaurants that levy a service charge require no
tips, but if you’re feeling generous, you can leave an extra tip for the wait staff; just leave some
change behind after you pay up.
6.  Climate in the Philippines is generally warm and humid, so dress for the weather.

Filipinos are famous for their driving habits (or lack thereof). Traffic often grinds to a screeching halt,
especially in major cities (Metro Manila in particular), and the honking of horns is a very common
occurrence. When there is no traffic, speeding, swerving and reckless passing happen on a regular basis,
especially on desolate rural roads. Car traffic competes with bus and jeepney traffic, which jostle sidewalk
curbs to get more passengers, especially in areas without designated bus stops: the fact that bus and
jeepney drivers' salaries are determined based on passenger load does not help the traffic situation in
many cities. Motorcycles frequently weave through traffic, increasing the risk of accidents. However, traffic
lights, while frequently ignored in the past, are more strictly adhered to now. Seatbelts are mandatory
only for persons seating in the front seat.

Glorietta. This is a one-stop shopping center that is completely unique in
its structure and design. Some regard the design as similar to a wheel hub
while there are others that liken the distinctive design to an octopus.
Actually, the mall is divided into four wings or sections - the G1, G2, G3
and G4. If you are looking for shops that are affordable in the Metro
Manila area, these four sections are the places to visit. You can also easily

Greenbelt is a shopping mall located at Ayala Center, Makati City, Metro
Manila, Philippines which is just near Glorietta and SM Makati. It is owned
by Ayala Malls, a real-estate subsidiary of Ayala Land, which is an affiliate
of Ayala Corporation. It opened in the 1980s and it is one of Ayala
Corporation's flagship projects. The mall offers a mix of high-end retail

Forming the core of the museum's historical collections
are sixty handcrafted dioramas that chronicle the rich
tapestry of Philippine history. Ayala Museum also
features a one-of-a-kind boat gallery showcasing

colonial economy. Archaeological and ethnographic
objects from the country's northern and southern

collection. The fine arts collection features important
works by three painters considered pioneers in

in Philippine art and popularized new modes of
