8. E-Learning and the Road to Success Society is ready for a change to education but the stakeholders are not so willing to let go of a system that has served us well for two plus centuries. Education needs to reflect the reality of the students living in the information age. The current approach to education has resulted in a dropout rate of nine point four percent (2005) and only twenty-eight percent of twelfth grade high school students believe that school work is meaningful. (Wirt, Choy, Gerald, Provasnik, Rooney, and Watanabe, 2002).

Good Day, My name is Gary Burns and I would like to begin today by thanking you for attending this presentation. Technology today is leaps and bounds of what it was just 20 years ago. Today we can peer into the human body and view various body parts without even touching it with the assistance of Technology.Our students can now interact with the periodic tables and understand how they work with each other through life like animation. We can provide simulations to train flight personnel without even leaving the ground. And we can do all of this , “over the internet”. If all of this can be done via the internet why can we not harness this wealth of knowledge and bring it to our E-Learning Classrooms? The potential for learning is only limited by our imaginations.

Schools and classrooms are dynamic, interactive, social places, where teachers and students communicate, share information, and challenge each other's ideas but why cant we do this over the internet?The e-learning basically expands the resources available for our teachers and decreases the time and location dependencies that can be limiting factors in our schools
The Internet is not an approach to education, but rather a tool that e-learning facilitators can use with almost any educational theory such as history, math, or the sciences.It allows for e-learning to be just as effective as traditional educational means.it enhances dynamic communication, and it makes collaboration easier by reducing the need for collaborators to be in the same place at the same time.
Participatory Media is essential to e-learning. It allows interaction and stimulated learning. Some types of this include:PowerPoint (or other presentation software) is an exciting way to visually bring learning to the other students Create animations Interactive professionalPodcasting stored on a publicly-addressable server a podcast allows students to share their learning experiences. It provides them with a world-wide audience that makes learning meaningful and assessment authentic Teachers can use the technology to provide additional and revision material to students to download and review at a time that suits them.Collaboration We can connect with many different Students, in the most remote of places around the world. It gives students the opportunity, encouragement, and mentoring they need to embrace, experience, understand, and honor the commonalties and differences of the histories, experiences, and perspectives they discover among their global peers. Learning Applications such as virtual tours and Simulations. One of the wonders of the Internet is that it can bring the world to you instead of your needing to find the time and money to explore the traditional way. There are countless educational websites that bring historically significant areas to life by the use of Virtual tours. Simulations provide a way for the students to accurately experience things such as dissections without the high cost of purchasing the real specimens. Resources from the Internet
These are just some of the tools that can be used for learning on the internet.Blackboards are the chalkboard of the 21st century. They are used to integrate all aspects of student and teacher e-learning.Lesson plans can now be developed, shared between teachers, and stored online to assist all teachers in creating more complete lesson plansReferences, Prior to the internet nearly all references came from your local library. Now the information is limitless.Online Collaboration . Online Projects are the new classroom projects. You can now share your ideas with other e-learning classes or countries and learn from each others experiences. These can be performed by using online chat rooms, or videos from software like Skype to view other e-learners.
Virtual training such as netTreckker has increased ten fold over the past few years. It offers the students an incredible opportunity to view objects that were once only read about. Often the online training used by the teachers drive competition among students and give them a chance to apply the skills and theories learned in class in a virtual arena’sTaking a classroom full of students to the Smithsonian might be the ultimate field trip. Financially speaking, though, that's a tough task if you're more than a few hours away from DC. However, taking a look at the Smithsonian online virtual tour perhaps is the next best thing
Educational Simulation Software can also provide the Student with learning experiences only dreamed of a few years ago.With software applications like Real Lives the student can go to any part of the world and look at any number of statistics and information about various cultures.
Simulations such as this one provide students with a variety of choices on nearly every object imaginable. They are interactive , which allows the student to be apart of the experiments or simulations.
a dissection can take place in this simulated world without harming any animals or repulsing the students. They are life-like and provide enormous amounts of information about each of the animals organs.
Students can research information on the Web, discuss what they find with the virtual classmates or an expert in the field they are studying, (However, effective use of this interaction and research opportunity depends on expert teaching. The range of resources and options students have access to on the Internet is staggering. Specific focus and guidance from the teacher is critical.)
