BEGINNING OF HOTEL INDUSTRY

• During the Greek and Roman era people began to travel.
Romans were famous for an extensive network of organized
travel routes (highways). This lead to a development of business
travel.

• Once the fall of the Roman Empire these routes fell into
disrepair and became quite dangerous to use. Very few people
traveled and those who did, did so a great risks.

• As we approach the medieval period, business people who
operated housing for travelers were considered crooks and were
not held in high regard. In early day the Code of Hammurani
made it illegal for landowners to charge for extra rooms in their
homes. Penalty for charging travelers to use their homes was
execution. The people who operated inns during this time were
often retired gladiators that were used for slumming
(prostitution) and drinking. These houses of sin were unsanitary
and carried a bad reputation.
• What could be considered the modern concept of a hotel
derives from 1794, when the City Hotel opened in New York
City. It was purported to be the first building devoted
exclusively to hotel operations. For it‟s time, the building was
quite large and possessed 73 rooms.

• Opening of Tremont House Boston in 1829, Designed by Isaiah
Rogers : The first major breakthrough in the industry. This hotel
was considered by many to be the beginning of first class
service.
• FEATURES :
o 170 rooms
o Reception area
o Private single and double rooms were available, which offered
not only privacy, but also security. Rooms had locks
o Water pitchers and a washing bowl
o Free soap was provided in each room.
oThe Tremont House offered French cuisine
o The first hotel to have a Bellboy.

This hotel set the standard for luxury accommodations and
for the first time the concept of treating all customers with
Concept of The „BOUTIQUE' Hotel:

• “You can go clothes shopping at Macy‟s or you can go clothes
shopping at one of these small boutiques in New York City. This hotel
is going to be like the boutique of hotels.” --- Steve Rubell

• Invented in New York in 1984.

• Two businessmen, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, started the hotel
"Morgans" on Madison Avenue, Manhattan. The main features were
the independence of the design and its uniqueness

• The uniqueness lies in the fact that these
hotels are highly personalized and are
characterized by :
Limited number of rooms
Limited space for events
A small lobby
Personalized service
Cultural heritage conservation
Sense of aesthetics
Rooms are individually crafted
ICE HOTELS

An ice hotel is a temporary hotel made up of snow, sculpted blocks
of ice, and some steel framing. the ice hotels are reconstructed every
year, and are dependent upon constant sub-freezing temperatures
during construction and operation. The walls, fixtures, and fittings are
made entirely of ice, and are held together using a substance known
as snice, which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built
hotel

The Icehotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 17 km
from Kiruna, Sweden was the world's first ice hotel. In 1989, Japanese
ice artists visited the area and created an exhibition of ice art. In Spring
1990,
 French artist Jannot Derid held an
exhibition in a cylinder-shaped igloo
 in the area. One night there were no
rooms available in the town,
so some of the visitors asked
 for permission to spend the night
 in the exhibition hall. They slept in
 sleeping bags on top of reindeer
skin - the first guests of the "hotel."

The owners made a cozy and comfortable accommodation
inside, with two bedrooms, a study, a living room with a well
 equipped kitchen. The bathroom has a shower. It has a large
 deck where you can enjoy water and sun. Washing machine
 and dryer, two televisions and stereo are at your disposal.

In India, there are houseboat hotels in kerela and kashmir.

• Ginger is Indian hotel chain established by Roots Corporation
Limited, and part of the Tata Group, a new brand under a category
called "Smart Basics Hotels". The first hotel was opened
in Whitefield, Bangalore in June, 2004

• The guiding principle behind Ginger‟s concept is the focus on
key facilities that meet the key needs of the traveler. The
prototype was launched as a no-frills hotel under the indiOne
brand. After fine-tuning the facilities and services, the company
launched “smart-basics” hotels under the brand name “ginger”

•These are self sufficient hotels with all modern facilities and have
successfully marketed this new hospitality paradigm, with its
innovative aspects such as self check-in kiosks, wi-
fi, ATM, meeting room, conference room, etc,and by doing away
with traditional services such as in room service, multiple
restaurants and swimming pool.
The concept of Weekend Breaks

• Hotels were traditionally meant for travelers visiting different cities
or countries.

• Now there is a concept of short break/ weekend break as a special
offer where you just leave work for a day and go for a luxurious short
break to a hotel.

• The hotels usually include bed in breakfast, lunch , discounts on
various services, and late checkout
