Everyone had to adjust to the new building, new rules and procedures. This year everyone has become accustomed to our school’s high expectations and made great efforts to achieve our goals. It is hard to believe we are coming to the end of another wonderful and memorable school year. I have to say that I could not be prouder of the staff and students at our school for all the hard work and extra effort they have put into making Garfield such a special place. We were after all, voted the “Cool School” of the week as seen on Fox 8 news. On the state level we have been designated an Effective School and on the federal level known as Value Added we have achieved greater than expected growth.Most importantly, I can assure you that the students of Garfield Middle School received a strong education by teachers who utilized classroom data to drive instruction. I feel confident that our students grew academically and emotionally and are well prepared to take on the challenges of the next year. On the next page I’ve tried to give everyone in the Garfield Community a snapshot of the exciting opportunities and accomplishments that have taken place this year. At the top of the lists of a majority of participants for criteria to consider in closing a school were geographic placement of the school, maintaining small and equitable class sizes and comparable classroom environments, walking distance and safe pickup/dropoff areas. <br />When asked what factors participants would consider important when deciding whether or not to support Phase III, the top concerns were whether or not the district received the State’s $47 million contribution to the plan, making sure that all students attend school in a renovated or rebuilt school and the financial impact on the community. Regarding the financial impact, Board President Edward Favre reiterated that the Board has no plan to put an operating levy on the ballot in the near future, however a bond issue eventually will be needed to move forward with Phase III.<br />The Phase III Steering Committee will continue to meet through May and then resume again in September in preparation for the next Community Forum on Sept. 15, where the committee will seek community input on its recommendations.<br />For more information and to view the documents presented at the Community Forum, please visit www.lakewoodcityschools.org and click on the Phase III button on the home page. Zuby<br />Summer Reading Returns<br />Reading is an enjoyable and educational experience that can easily be treasured over the summer months. Once again this summer, all future sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grade students have a required reading assignment. All incoming middle school students should read two books over the summer and complete a journal writing activity and/or participate in a book discussion at the Lakewood Public Library. Information is forthcoming for all incoming ninth grade students. Please watch the Lakewood High School website for further details. <br />These required summer reading assignments are due when school starts in the fall. All future sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students will be given assignment information packets before school ends in June. Additional details about these important assignments can be accessed on the Harding, Garfield, or LHS websites. <br />ART NEWS<br /> We wanted to thank everyone for attending our opening night at the Local Girl Gallery for our second annual Garfield Middle School art show. The art show was a huge success! If you did not have the opportunity to attend, the show will remain hung up at the Local Girl Gallery on Detroit Rd. until May 2nd. At that time the students will receive their portion of the funds raised if their work sold, or their work will be returned to them by the end of the school year through a series of morning announcements.<br /> I would also like to send a warm wish to Staci Peltz, one of our art teachers, as she will no longer be with us at Garfield next year. Mrs. Peltz has been with us for two years and has made some wonderful connections with our students. Here is what they composed about our beloved character, Mr. Walter. <br />Class #1<br />As a leader, confidence, responsibility and fairness describe him, however, he has a fun side as well. You can find him at school sporting events sitting with the students, cheering on the team. At school dances, you won’t find him standing along the wall in the back of the gym, but instead, on the dance floor trying out the latest moves. He even makes an appearance at the weekly after-school knitting club. When someone does make a mistake, he listens and approaches the issue looking at both sides of the story. His fairness, outgoing personality, and positive approach to his job are what make him the most popular principal in town. We are proud that Mr. Walter is our principal.<br />Class #2<br />Attentive, dependable, and responsible, are all traits of a good leader. Our leader, Mr. Walter, expresses these traits on a daily basis through his actions, thoughts, and words. Even on the coldest day, you will find him directing traffic to make sure every student stays safe. You can count on Mr. Walter to appear on the news every Monday to announce the winners of the gold ticket drawing. He takes his job seriously, making sure every problem is handled quickly and fairly. ![GMS Talent ShowCan you sing? Can you dance? Can you play an instrument? Well, we know a few people who can and they were in the school talent show. There weren’t many dancers, but there sure were a lot of singers.<br /> <br />First, Nabelh Manaa sang My Heart Will Go On. Her voice was great. It was a good choice to have her open the show.<br />Secondly, Willow Hawks sang Caught Myself. She sang in a cappella and she did an amazing job. For her voice, she didn’t need the music at all.<br />After Willow, Joan Hoile, Virginia Ashley, and Joy Hoile sang The Call. The three did an awesome job. They each got to share their own fame by singing a part alone.<br />Next, we had Carleigh Spence singing Yesterday. She didn’t really sing yesterday that’s just the name of the song. <br />Following Carleigh Spence was Bryanna DeFilippo singing Full Circle. She threw in a few steps to go along with her song. She did great.<br />Grace Therber did an Irish step dance to Treble Jig. She looked like the part because she had all that she needed. She is an amazing Irish dancer.<br />After the Irish step dance came Enas Muhammad singing If I Were A Boy. <br />Next Jazmyn Paoli sang Sunny Happiness. She really made the crowd happy. Her voice was incredible. <br />Before the intermission, Bryanna Defilippo and Argisa Deda sang Put Your Records On. They were great and they definetly put the crowds records on.<br />FIVE MINUTE INTERMISSION<br />Its trio time! All The Single Ladies was the song that was danced by Katya Tawasha, Shereen Abuzahriyeh, and Hailey Jones. They did an amazing job. They even threw in a few cartwheels to spice up the dance. <br />Following the intermission, Soule Dimacchia did gymnastics to Stronger. Her flips and splits were great. Everyone loved her.<br />After the dance, Joy Hoile sang About You Now. She has an amazing voice and the crowd really thought so too.<br />Argisa Deda, who also sang Put Your Records On, sang Bleeding Love. She had to multitask but she made it through and did a wonderful job.<br />Next, Ines Bakia and Carliegh Spence sang Teardrops On My Guitar. Both sang right on and they were flawless.<br />After Ines Bakia and Carliegh Spence, Me (Mackenzie Nekl) and Jenny Majcher danced to Geek Love. The crowd was listening to the music clapping along. We both did an awesome job. Everyone loved our dance.<br />Next Virginia Ashley sang and played guitar to the song Decode. Her singing was phenomenal. Her guitar playing was what got the crowd going. She played the guitar during a solo in her song. Virginia Ashley had an awesome show.<br />To end the show, Emily Stokes sang Fly On The Wall. She did an amazing job. <br /> By Jenny Byczek and Mackenzie Nekl<br />Author Sonia Nazario talks to Mr. Corrigan’s 6th period Spanish class at Lakewood High about her bestseller Enrique’s Journey<br />“Wow, that was amazing” Brittany said. “I never realized how hard life was for people in Central America and Mexico” Rick told me. Matt commented “I see why they risk so much to come the USA” adding “I really have it pretty good here”. Sarah said “I cried hearing how the mom had decided to leave her kids not because she did not want them but because she could not feed them and send them to school with so little money available at her job in Honduras”.<br />This is a tale of human tragedy and sacrifice, love and redemption. It also is a ‘reality check’ for the reader to begin to understand the life of the migrant who seeks a better life in the USA. As our own government hammers its way through the legislative process on immigration, the illegals continue to arrive. Sending soldiers with machine guns, hiring border minute men and armed mercenaries to patrol the border between the USA and Mexico will not stop the refugee from attempting to enter the USA. The depth of poverty, misery and suffering in their home countries is so overwhelming that anything seems a better option.<br />Garfield students gained a first hand true account of a young 15 year old boy named Enrique who leaves Honduras to find his mom in the USA. She left when he was 5 and she now lived and works in North Carolina. She entered the USA illegally to work so her family could live a better life in Honduras, one of the poorest nations in the Americas. But Enrique needed to see her, to hug her and to know if she loved him for sure. So, he jumped the trains- the beasts- of Mexico over and over again, finally making it to the border after 12 attempts. Each time previously, he was caught by corrupt Mexican agents, MS6 gangsters who beat him senseless, or police who robbed him then shipped him to Guatemala. He came back and tried again time after time. Finally he made it after traveling 12,000 miles in repeated trips.<br />Students heard first hand form the author about how kids would be beaten, hacked by machetes, and thrown form the trains by various gang members who would rob them of everything except their underwear. Girls were raped repeatedly and often killed afterwards. The author herself went to Tegucigalpa and retraced the trail of Enrique and thousands of others who have done the same odyssey. She tells of one evening when gang members were chasing her across boxcars as the train rumbled through Chiapas, Mexico and she feared being reaped and beaten. She made it to the conductor before being caught by the thugs. After returning to her job at the LA Times, she had to undergo therapy for 6 months due to the recurring nightmare of being assaulted by the gangbangers.<br />Most students marveled at the level of human kindness many of the Mexican people bestowed upon the victims of the trains. Each day young migrants slip from the trains, get sucked into the wheels or are thrown from the tops by marauding gangsters. The Red Cross or local hospital tends to the immediate needs of those who loose a leg or both, an arm, or other injuries form ‘the beast”. But as they are poor with no money to pay the hospital, they are usually sent out after their wounds stop bleeding. Local poor who live near the rails or local parish priests take the damaged humans into their homes or churches to nurse them as well as possible. <br />Sonia talks about an unsung hero named Olga who has dedicated her life and opening her tiny home to help these Central American young victims of the trains who now can never work, run or play due to amputations. Many cry or ask for death saying who would want them as spouses now they are damaged. She tells them of her own loss of finger tips in a tortilla factory. She inspires them to go on and that God has a plan for them. Olga is very poor but still raised funds in numerous ways and asks stores and restaurants to donate dated food and items to be used in her mini clinic. <br />The book is an excellent contemporary snapshot of what life is like for so many poor and desperate people -our neighbors to the south. Kids learned that 50% of all Hondurans live on $1 per day and that 50% of all Mexicans live on $2 per day. With these statistics in mind, kids begin to understand the desperation of so many who seek a better life in the USA legally or illegally. <br />I have donated a copy of the book, signed by Sonia Nazario, to the Garfield LRC for students to read. Brian Cleary is the author of many books including Rainbow Soup-Adventures in Poetry, The Laugh Stand, and Rhyme and PUNishment. An introductory presentation took place in the cafetorium for all sixth graders. Then throughout the day Mr. Cleary conducted workshops with groups of students on how to write creatively utilizing figurative language and poetic devices. Each student left their workshop with a finished poem. This author visit was made possible with a Margaret Warner Educational Grant through the Lakewood Alumni Association.<br />SIXTH GRADE TEAM NEWS<br />Congratulations to the sixth grade students who are now veteran middle schoolers! They have finished the year strong and have worked hard on preparing for the Ohio Achievement Tests in reading and math. They are experienced science technicians in utilizing the scientific method, and in social studies they completed a trip around the world studying world geography and cultures culminating in a major research project of a European country. Don’t forget the Summer Reading Assignment! It’s your first assignment for next school year! Best of luck in seventh grade!<br />CBI NEWS<br />Students are now preparing themselves for designing their personal career plan by assessing their interests, skills and work values online at a website called “Kudor”. In addition, each student will explore a variety of college and career options.<br />Why do this? <br />Young people too often have a tendency to “drift” into jobs because of a lack of guidance, direction, understanding of the world of work. Most often, they simply don't know what they want to do. <br />For example, a high school senior may feel pressure from peers, or elsewhere, to pursue a university degree in some field when his or her interests, skills, and work values may indicate a technical career is a better match. <br />A college or university student with a two or four year degree may be better suited to select a professional field more compatible with the their interests, skills, and work values.<br />Similarly, adults in the work force are often unhappy with their career choice because too often the employer may not be prepared to provide the tools and guidance necessary in determining a career path within the organization beneficial to both.<br />So, by developing a career portfolio, an interest inventory, and a work values inventory, students in the future have a better chance of finding a career that provides fulfillment and satisfaction.<br />BRUCE SCHAEDLICH<br />CBI COORDINATOR<br />GARFIELD MIDDLE SCHOOL<br />*********************************************************************************************************************<br />Thank you to all Garfield Middle School 2008-2009 Members! It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time to close the books on the 2nd year at Garfield Middle School. In many ways, this beautiful school feels like it is still brand new and yet things run so smoothly its seems like its been around for years.
