SyllabusNCCMath 122Summer Session II 2011<br />Title:Harvard Calculus I (4cr.)<br />Text:Calculus by Hughes-Hallett, 5th Edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.<br />Description:This course is an extension of Math 111 (Harvard Pre-Calculus). Math 122 introduces the concepts of differentiation and integration as well as applications with emphasis on the meaning of symbols used and interpretation of results.<br />Topics:<br />Programming the TI-83/84<br />Limits and Continuity<br />Difference Quotients<br />Newton’s Method<br />L’Hôpital’s Rule<br />Numerical and Analytical Derivatives<br />First and Second Derivative Tests<br />Rates of Change and Applications <br />Numerical and Analytical Anti-Derivatives<br />Accumulators and Applications <br />Area and Riemann Sums<br />Mathematical Modeling <br />Differential Equations<br />Fundamental Theorem of Calculus <br />U-Substitution <br />General Course Requirements:<br />100% attendance(1 day grace, if you miss 5 < t < 30 min of class = 1/4 day,if you miss 31 < t < 60 min = 1/2 day, if you miss t > 60 min = 1 day, 1 day = 5pts: participation exam grade) <br />15 homework sets(due next day, 3 hours outside of class per night including math center - see below) <br />5 cumulative exams(one each week) <br />Daily Class Requirements:TI-83/84, Text, Homework, Notebook, Pencil <br />Math Center Requirement:As part of this course, students should avail themselves of further study and/or educational assistance in the Mathematics Center (B130, B126). These activities and use of the resources provided are deemed an integral part of the course and will help the student master necessary knowledge and skills.
