2. Oxford es una ciudad universitaria británica, situada a 80 km al
noroeste de Londres, en el condado de Oxfordshire, en
Inglaterra, y es una de las universidades más antiguas del
mundo. Es a la vez una ciudad muy industrial.
Oxford is a British university town, located 80 km northwest of
London, in the county of Oxfordshire, England, and is one of
the oldest universities in the world. It is also a very industrial
town.

3. SHELDONIAN THEATRE
Fue inaugurado en el siglo XVII, a la muerte de Gilbert Sheldon, su fundador, que donó
dinero para la construcción, por lo que lleva su nombre. Fue diseñado por Christopher
Wren. Para la inauguración Haydn fue invitado y compuso una obra espectacular. Hoy se
utiliza para ceremonias de graduación y actos oficiales . Puede ser alquilado para
conciertos, conferencias, etc.
It was opened in the seventeenth century to the death of Gilbert Sheldon, who funded
and donated money for the building, so that bears his name. It was designed by
Christopher Wren. For the opening, Haydn was invited and composed a spectacular work.
Today it is used for graduation ceremonies and official events. It can be hired for
concerts, lectures, etc.

6. BIBLIOTECA BODLEIAN
De estilo gótico, fue ampliada en el siglo XVI con
dos torres y un remate en almenas.
Los edificios de la Biblioteca están dispuestos
alrededor de una gran plaza, bajo la cual se
encuentran muchos de los fondos. Los libros se
organizan por grupos temáticos.
BODLEIAN LIBRARY
Gothic style, was enlarged in the sixteenth century
with two towers and battlements decoration.
Library buildings are arranged around a large
square. Under it, there are many of the funds. The
books are organized by subject groups.

8. Las figuras y cabezas que decoran los
laterales son más modernas, como el
león Ashlan de Narnia, en homenaje a
temas ingleses famosos.
The shapes and heads that decorate the
sides are more modern, like the lion of
Narnia Ashlan, in honor of famous
British subjects.

12. Bóvedas de crucería góticas del
pasadizo que conecta la plaza con la
entrada a la biblioteca principal, junto a
la que se encuentra la Escuela de
Historia y de Lenguas Griega y Hebrea .

14. BIBLIOTECA DE MEDICINA RADCLIFFE
Construida en el siglo XIX. Radcliffe fue uno
de los primeros cirujanos de Oxford . Quiso
que hubiera un lugar que almacenara el
conocimiento médico para las generaciones
posteriores. También fundó el Hospital
Radcliffe.
Bajo este edifico hay un almacén biblioteca
del siglo XVIII que no está abierto al público
en general y solo se puede acceder a él con
permiso especial.

15. RADCLIFFE MEDICAL LIBRARY
Built in the nineteenth century. Radcliffe
was one of the first surgeons in Oxford. He
wanted a place that would store the medical
knowledge for next generations. He also
founded
Radcliffe Hospital. Under this
building, there’s a store form the eighteenth
century that is not opened to general
public. Only with a special permission it’s
possible to enter.

17. Merton College.
Parece que es el
colegio más antiguo

Se
empezó
a
construir en el siglo
XIII y se terminó en

the 14th century.

Este Colegio fue fundado por Enrique VI de
Inglaterra en 1438. Cuenta con una gran
biblioteca de Leyes e Historia, una capilla
del siglo XV, con un reloj de sol diseñado
por Christopher Wren

with collections strong in Law and History, a
chapel buitl in the 15th century, with a
sundial designed by Christopher Wren.

of the University. It
was a highly selective
Catholic college. It
expanded
in
the
fifteenth century and
preserved an ancient
sundial on the facade.
Today it is home to
students
of many
different faiths.

Fundado entre los siglos
XIII y XIV. Poco tiempo
después, el obispo de
Exeter fundó un colegio
al otro lado de la calle ,
llamado Exeter College.
Enseguida compartieron
tutores y estudiantes,
por lo que construyeron
un
puente
que
comunicaba
los dos
colegios.

It was founded in
the 13th -14th
centuries. Shortly
after, The bishop
of Exeter founded
a new college
opposite.
They
soon shared tutors
and students, so
they built a bridge
that joined both
Colleges.

monumento a John Keble. Fue
diseñado por William Batterfield en
estilo neo gótico Victoriano, con
ladrillos rojos. Es uno de los colegios
más grandes de Oxford. Tiene
también otros edificios modernos.

Neo-Gothic Victorian style, with red
bricks. It’s one of the larger colleges
of the University. It has other modern
buildings as well.
