Pourquoi apprendre le
français?
www.pimsleur.com
Around 220 million people around the world speak French
No, but really, why learn
French?
Learning a foreign language helps you to improve important
life skills such as bravery, compassion, patience, and a good
sense of humor. It can change the way you think about
communication, help you to meet new people, allow you to read
without translation, and enjoy your travels in a much more
rich and meaningful way. It might (maybe!) even help you
learn about new and exciting ideas and places!
As an added bonus, French belongs to a group of languages
called “romance languages” that descend from Latin and include
Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Italian. These languages
are closely related, so learning one will help you when you
decide to learn another one!
Ever wonder about the roots of certain English words? A lot of
them come from Latin, just like French. Learning French can
expand your English vocabulary! (Ex: Ameliorate and améliorer
mean to improve-- oh how à propos for this class!)
Statement of Purpose
In this class, we are here to
learn about the French
language and the people who
speak it. In order to
achieve these goals, we seek
to create a learning
environment that is fun,
supportive and focused.
Les Règles
DO:
-Speak in French
-Follow teacher’s directions
-Stay focused and on task
-Come to class prepared and
on time.
-Turn your homework in on
time.
-Treat your teacher and
classmates with respect
-Raise your hand and
participate in class.
-Ask for help
-Use common sense
DON’T:
-Speak in English,
unless asked.
-Interrupt
-Cheat, lie or steal
-Distract classmates
-Make excuses
Procédures Quotidiennes:
au début de la classe
-Turn in your homework at the front of the room and begin the
daily warm-up posted on the board.
-Get out your materials.
-Copy tonight’s assignment from the board in your agenda.
-Be in seat and quietly working when the bell rings.
-D’accord, vous êtes prêts?
Procédures Quotidiennes:
durant la classe
When can I use English? Foreign languages are best learned through
immersion, so I ask that you speak in French as much as possible.
However, it is natural that you won’t know words or understand
comments. In these cases, please ask, “Comment dit-on ____ en
français?” or say, “Je ne comprends pas. Expliquez en anglais, s’il
vous plaît!” English is a last resort!!!
When can I use Les Toilettes? When you need to. Don’t ask me, just go.
Take a pass, sign out, and no more than 2 at a time.
Can I send text messages in class? Mais Non! All cell phones should be
left in lockers. If you forget, turn it off and keep it in your
backpack.
Can I go to my locker to get my book? Mais Non! If you forget
something, you are out of luck! Please make sure to bring all of your
materials everyday.
Can I talk to my friend while you’re talking? Yes, you may speak to
your friend in French while I am speaking so long as you don’t distract
anyone. Il faut parler en français!
Procédures Quotidiennes:
A la fin de la classe
Pack up all of your materials and make sure your area is tidy.
Double check that you have written down tonight’s assignment
and know how to do it.
When I give you the go-ahead, you may line up and speak with
your friends until the bell rings.
Weekly/Monthly Procedures
Weekly sentences: On Fridays, turn in 10 sentences in French using that
week’s verbs and verb tenses. I will return your graded sentences on
Monday. I expect you to recopy them correctly and turn in the final
version on Thursday.
Semester creative group projects: Plan in advance. You will not have to
meet with your group outside of class time, but you will need to do
outside work for these projects. Do not procrastinate! Do your part of
the project.
Self-grading (quarterly): In the final week of each quarter, you will
submit a 5-7 sentence honest explanation of the grade that you think you
earned. Please elaborate on your participation in class, your effort
level, your improvement, and anything else that might not be obvious
from the grades I already have.
Extra Credit: There are minimal opportunities for extra credit. Do not
expect to be able to significantly change your letter grade through
extra credit.
Miscellaneous:
Drills: Follow my directions, and listen to the intercom announcements.
Assemblies: Stay together as a class, and give the speakers your full
attention.
Field Trips: I want us to go on field trips frequently, but I have to
trust that you will have top-notch behavior. I want to be wow-ed by how
well you listen and respect wherever we go so that we can go on more
trips in the future!
Les Bonnes Conséquences 
Positive 
-Learn French! Impress your friends and family! Travel
abroad with ease! Flirt with that cute French guy/gal!
- More fun activities! French food, movies, music, and
field trips.
-Pride
-Good grades
-Praise
-General happiness
-Sit where you want
-Games
http://www.myitaliansmorgasbord.com/2014/02/16/pain-au-chocolat-step-by-step-of-a-work-in-
progress/
Les Mauvaises Conséquences 
Negative

-Waste all of our time
-Confiscation of your stuff
-General sadness
-Seating arrangement
-Parent involvement
-Principal involvement
Action Plan
The class will modify this contract as needed, and then
will sign it and turn it in:
I___________, agree to the following:
I will treat my teacher and classmates with respect.
I will come to class prepared.
I will speak in French as much as possible.
I will turn in work that reflects my best efforts.
I will ask questions when I am confused.
I understand that if I am unable to live up to these
expectations, negative consequences will result.
Likewise, I understand that if I follow these
expectations, positive consequences will result.
Signed___________________________
P.S. FYI: You can thank the Frenchie Jean Jacques
Rousseau for the social contract theory!
Crisis Plan
1. Call Office.
2. Ask responsible, predetermined
student to oversee class.
3. Remove problem student from
classroom. Assist student to regain
self control, or accompany student to
office.
4. Notify parents.

It can change the way you think about communication, help you to meet new people, allow you to read without translation, and enjoy your travels in a much more rich and meaningful way. Yes, you may speak to your friend in French while I am speaking so long as you don’t distract anyone. Il faut parler en français!
  • 9. Procédures Quotidiennes: A la fin de la classe Pack up all of your materials and make sure your area is tidy. Double check that you have written down tonight’s assignment and know how to do it. When I give you the go-ahead, you may line up and speak with your friends until the bell rings.
  • 10. Weekly/Monthly Procedures Weekly sentences: On Fridays, turn in 10 sentences in French using that week’s verbs and verb tenses. I will return your graded sentences on Monday. I expect you to recopy them correctly and turn in the final version on Thursday. Semester creative group projects: Plan in advance. You will not have to meet with your group outside of class time, but you will need to do outside work for these projects. Do not procrastinate! Do your part of the project. Self-grading (quarterly): In the final week of each quarter, you will submit a 5-7 sentence honest explanation of the grade that you think you earned. Please elaborate on your participation in class, your effort level, your improvement, and anything else that might not be obvious from the grades I already have. Extra Credit: There are minimal opportunities for extra credit. Do not expect to be able to significantly change your letter grade through extra credit. Miscellaneous: Drills: Follow my directions, and listen to the intercom announcements. Assemblies: Stay together as a class, and give the speakers your full attention. Field Trips: I want us to go on field trips frequently, but I have to trust that you will have top-notch behavior. I want to be wow-ed by how well you listen and respect wherever we go so that we can go on more trips in the future!

  • 13. Action Plan The class will modify this contract as needed, and then will sign it and turn it in: I___________, agree to the following: I will treat my teacher and classmates with respect. I will come to class prepared. I will speak in French as much as possible. I will turn in work that reflects my best efforts. I will ask questions when I am confused. I understand that if I am unable to live up to these expectations, negative consequences will result. Likewise, I understand that if I follow these expectations, positive consequences will result. Signed___________________________ P.S. FYI: You can thank the Frenchie Jean Jacques Rousseau for the social contract theory!
