readings. Our Resurrection Garden reminds us to come and pray in the
silence ofour church for our special intentions.
Referendum
Marriage should remain the cornerstone ofthe family unit and it does not
need redefining. This referendum is not about rights or equality, but can
seriously damage our future understanding ofmarriage in Irish Society. On
Friday let us stand up and vote "NO".
Dead Theologians Society
A new youth group for teenagers takes place every Wednesday at 7.30pm in St
Bernadette's Chapel, Rockwood Parade, Sligo for teenagers between the age of 12-
18yrs. It is wonderful opportunity for our young people to deepen their knowledge
and understanding of our Catholic faith in a fun and dynamic way. For any inquiries
please contact Aisling on 086-1500387.
Divine Mercy Novena
The Divine Mercy novena takes place every Friday in our Church beginning
at 3:00pm. Information booklet at the Church Bookstand.

Family Prayer in Carraroe Church
Family Prayer continues with Adoration on Tuesday beginning at 7:00pm. This is an
important opportunity to pray for your family.
Tobernalt Holy Well
The shrine of St. Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes reminds us to ponder and pray
to Our Lady for the month of May. This week take a little time to visit and pray at this
unique location.
Marriage is important - Reflect before you change it
The following points are taken from Marriage is important – Reflect before you
change it, the pastoral statement from the bishops ofIreland which was
published after their Spring 2015 general meeting: We respect the views of
people who think differently to us, trusting that our sincerely held views,
grounded in faith, will also be heard and respected.Mothers and fathers bring
different, yet complementary gifts and strengths into a child’s life. We ask the
people ofIreland to consider very carefully the profound implications which
this constitutional amendment would have on the family environment and on
our understanding ofparenthood.
Why is marriage so important?
In marriage, a woman and man promise love and fidelity to each other, for the
rest oftheir lives. Not knowing what lies ahead they nevertheless make a
commitment that they will continue to love each other whatever comes. While
we knowthat their commitment may break down and knowalso the sorrow
that this can bring, we also recognise that many couples live that marital
commitment faithfully.
Married love providesa stable and nurturing environment, where children
receive the most important and lasting education ofall: how to be a member
of a family and of society. Any proposal to redefine the meaning and purpose
of marriage on which the family is founded, by enabling the relationship ofa
same sex couple to also become a marriage, is based on the assumption that
marriage - which has always been recognised as the natural, primary and
fundamental unit group of society – has nothing unique about it, and on the
assumption that marriage can be stripped ofthat social standing without
obscuring its irreplaceable social role. From The Meaning of Marriage
pastoral statement, see full text on www.meaningofmarriage.ie

Accord - Pre- Marriage Course - Reflection
The announcement by Tusla, the government agency this week that funding is
to be cut for Pre-Marriage course is very disappointing. Although funding has
decreased in recent years the complete cessation offinancial support in a time
when our economy is improving is very disappointing.
Accord in our diocese provides course for couples who celebrate a multitude
of faiths and none. The course is designed to help couples in their relationship
as it reflects on areas such as communications, conflict, children and
commitment. Course are delivered by committed and dedicated volunteers.
The demand for such course has increased in the last year, especially in the
Sligo area.
The decision by this government to cut funding to the Sligo centre and the
Family Life Centre in Boyle is a clear indication that this government has no
respect for the family and for couples preparing for marriage. Accord
operates under the umbrella ofthe Catholic Church and the withdrawal of
funding comes at a time when our church is opposing the government on the
same sex referendum. Surely a clear case ofdiscrimination against an
3. organisation that is performing good works in our Diocese and throughout
Ireland.
