The Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District is responsible for protecting the region from air pollution. Their jurisdiction includes communities in Yolo and Solano counties. The district is concerned with ozone, particulate matter, and greenhouse gas emissions, especially from motor vehicles which account for nearly half of ozone and greenhouse gas pollution in the region. Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) can help reduce these emissions compared to gasoline vehicles. Over 8 years of typical use, a PEV would produce 112 fewer pounds of ozone and particulate forming emissions and 43 fewer metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions than a gasoline vehicle. PEVs also reduce dependence on petroleum and have fewer fluid leaks than gasoline vehicles.

5. Air Pollutants of Concern
Both pollutants have potential for a variety of
respiratory and cardiopulmonary impacts:
Ozone Particulate Matter
- susceptibility to - increased irritation of
respiratory infections the airways, coughing
or difficulty breathing
- increased risk of heart
attacks and strokes - aggravated asthma
- increase in - irregular heartbeat
mortality/premature
- heart attacks
deaths
- cancer risk (diesel PM)
- damage to crops and

natural vegetation

9. Air Pollutants of Concern
Particulate Matter (PM 10, PM 2.5)
Major Sources:
Diesel Vehicle Exhaust
Fireplaces/Woodstoves
9
10. Air Pollutants of Concern
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during
the combustion of fossil fuels traps
heat in the atmosphere and contributes
to global warming.
10
11. Motor Vehicles and Air Quality
Motor vehicles have become significantly
more energy efficient and less polluting,
however population growth and increased
driving has created the need to shift to
11
cleaner technologies.
12. Motor Vehicles and Air Quality
Autos and light/med
trucks account for
over 45% of the
ozone forming
emissions and
almost 40% of the
GHG emissions in
the Sacramento
Region
12
13. Motor Vehicles and Air Quality
One strategy to help meet our air
quality standards, greenhouse gas
reduction goals and reduce petroleum
dependence is to shift from gasoline
vehicles to PEV’s.
13
14. Air Quality Benefits of PEV
PEV vs. average new gasoline
vehicle driven 12,000 miles/year
for 8 years:
- Annual reductions in ozone and
particulate forming emissions: 14
pounds per year (112 pounds over
8 years)
- Annual GHG reductions: 5.4 metric
tons of CO2 (43.2 metric tons over
8 years)
14
15. Gasoline Vehicle vs. PEV
“Upstream” Emissions
Gasoline Vehicle Emissions Plug-in Vehicle Emissions
Tailpipe emissions No tail-pipe emissions
Upstream/power plant
Emissions associated with Power plant emissions:
getting gasoline to market:
PEV recharges directly from
electrical grid eliminating many
- Importing of crude oil in
steps and upstream emissions
tanker ships
associated with gasoline
- Refining of oil to gasoline production
- Trucks delivering gas to
fueling station
- Gas station operations/
pumping gasoline into
vehicle 15
16. Additional PEV Benefits
Reduced dependence on petroleum
- Most electricity in CA produced from
natural gas/hydro/wind/solar
No coolant or motor oil
- less potential for water pollution
from spills and storm run-off
Quiet operation
