• Some (very few) served as soldiers in the
Continental Army
• South Carolina fought the idea of slaves serving as
soldiers; insisted they could only work as cooks or
other jobs that didn’t require weapons
• Eventually, they agreed that up to 1/3 of the militia
could be made up of slaves
• Some slaves served in partisan bands
• The British promised freedom to those who would
fight for them
