It’s your business, do something about it
Mike Marchev
There is a thin line between “customer service” and being a
doormat. Remember–you can’t be all things to all people.
If there is one common refrain I hear (and if I’ve heard it once
I’ve heard it a hundred times) it is:
Potential clients contact me to milk me for as much information
as they can before they head out to book their own vacation on the
internet.
It is your business and you can run it any way you so choose.
If you have a fee, the best time to explain this is upfront. No-
body likes surprises. Not me. Not you. Nobody!
If your policy is to charge a “research fee” after the first ten
minutes of dialogue, then it’s your obligation to do so. It’s your
business. It’s your time. If you choose not to get paid for what
you can offer clients, then whose fault is that?
Remember that there will always be two types of people.
Those who you can help, and those you can’t help. Of those you
can help, there are also two types. Those who will be glad to pay
you for your services, and those who will try to avoid paying
you.
Of these four types, it is your responsibility to hunt down
more of the type you can help, and who are glad to pay you. If
they’re not down right giddy about paying you, at least they will
follow through.
Please understand the following, (this sounds a lot easier than
it is):
I suppose the word “confidence” also comes into play. If you
are truly “confident” in the role you play, then it should be easier
to get paid for your services.
There is no “system” per se, but if you feel that your knowl-
edge is valuable, then no apology is needed for asking to be
compensated. The problem arises when the individual agent
either does not believe in their own value, or they are not adding
any value to the relationship.
And this brings us full-circle in today’s Big Idea. If you want
to become more confident and more worthy of higher fees,
then it just might behoove you to start reading more about your
business and your competition. Make no mistake about it folks,
you are in the marketing business first, and the travel business
second.

AutoGuide AGVs announces new sales manager
AutoGuide AGVs,
manufacturer of auto-
mated guided vehicles
(AGVs), has appointed
Joseph (Joe) Hillebrand
as the company’s new
sales manager. Hille-
brand will be supporting
business development and sales for AutoGuide.
“Joe’s engineering background and years of hands-on ex-
perience designing successful AGV systems make him a great
addition to the AutoGuide team,” said Sarah Carlson, vice
president of marketing and business development for AutoGu-
ide.” He knows the right questions to ask to determine what the
customer needs. He then uses his immense industry knowledge
to provide the perfect system at the best value, which is exactly
what AutoGuide’s driving mission.”
Hillebrand comes to AutoGuide with nearly 20 years of expe-
rience in the AGV industry, including automotive production,
factory automation, heavy equipment and material handling
sales. Before joining AutoGuide, Hillebrand served as account
manager for an industrial automation company where he de-
veloped customer specifications and standards, and solutions to
custom applications. Joe holds an electrical engineering degree
from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and has served as
senior electrical designer of AGV systems and automated guided
cart (AGC) systems for a global material handling company.

Five tips when you have five minutes with a prospect
By Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE
If you are on the phone, a webinar, or in person, and you
have a few minutes with the executive, what do you say to keep
on track and be professional? Here is an invaluable framework.
Adapt it to your situation, and boost your confidence and
credibility.
Imagine that you have a satisfied client company for one of
your offerings. You feel now is the best time to discuss your
next and higher investment offering. The team, your main
contact, is ready to view a product demonstration set for the
next day. All your demos are delivered in a webinar. At 2 P.M.
you get a call from your main contact who says “Great news!
Tomorrow our boss, who is the real decision-maker, is going to
be in our office. Rather than just showing our team what you
have to offer, the boss said he would like to sit in on the first
five minutes. I know you will do well.”
Don’t panic. This is a great opportunity, and once you make a
positive impact, the sales cycle is going to be cut short. You will
not have to hear, “We love this, but now we have to convince
our boss.” This is, however, now your number one priority to
prepare. You may be seasoned, but take this seriously. Your
sales manager is always telling you, “Sell to the C Suite.” This is
your chance. Remember these five simple suggestions for sales
success.
1. Build rapport before you speak. It is easier to connect if
you can make eye contact with the client, so turn on your
webcam to welcome everyone and then again when you
answer questions. Although many professionals say they
are not comfortable doing this, it has many benefits. Who
can resist your friendly smile? You will look more confi-
dent, and it is tougher to say no when they are looking at
you.
2. Be prepared, and get to the point. Remember, with an
executive you need to be clear, concise, credible, and able
to articulate the bottom line of your message. The higher
up the corporate ladder you go, the more quickly you need
to get to the point and demonstrate value. As counterin-
tuitive as it may seem, the less time you have in which to
present your case, the longer you will need to prepare. You
may have friendly chatter with the team before you get to
business, but in this case every second counts. Be polite,
respectful, and get to the point fast.
3. Remember you are not alone. Speak on behalf of your
leadership. This way you can feel you are making a connec-
tion with the position, even when you are not holding that
position yourself. You will discover that this technique adds
to your confidence.
4. Remind the executive they have already made a wise deci-
sion by doing business with your company. Remind them
that they have already researched your company and that
they were comfortable enough to make you a vendor of
choice. This is just a logical next step.
5. Make heroes of the team you are working with. These are
your internal champions, and although they may not make
the ultimate decision, they certainly have influence and
can sabotage your sale. Your job is to work closely with
the team or champion who will give you information. Do
your research so that you are on target with your questions
about their company and the approach the executive will
most likely respond to.

Safety Corner
How to advise your customers they
need to make safety changes
Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems
When I started out in the material handling industry years ago,
I was very lucky to start out at a dealership with some excellent
and patient managers, who took the time to teach and coach me
in the right way to work with customers. I started in aftermarket
and moved into truck sales and major accounts over my career at
the dealership. During that time, I learned that you must tell the
customers the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, no
matter how bad it seems. You were allowed to be diplomatic and
sympathetic in telling it, but none the less, it had to be told regard-
less of the consequences to the salesperson or the dealership.
That was a valuable lesson and one that I had to apply recently
when working with a new customer. During my first audit of their
material handling fleet for safety and functionality, I found a number
of very serious issues, I literally saw 30 accident and injury pictures
which would scare you to death and found the systems that should
prevent these types of issues were broken, and had been for some
time. I was called into a meeting with the corporate safety manager,
the facility manager, his operations manager and the maintenance
manager along with a number of their forklift trainers. The top two
managers were new to the facility and they had both just come from
a company with an excellent safety program. Their first question was
“How did we do?” to which I said “You are very lucky to have not
had a forklift fatality yet.” That was definitely not what they expected
to hear and it turned the meeting’s tone from casual to deadly serious
in about five seconds. They asked me to rate them from 1-10, with
1 being the worst location I had ever visited and 10 representing the
best, from a forklift safety standpoint. They got a 2 on the scale of
10.
At that point, I fully expected I might be flying back home early
without completing the project, but to my relief they said they
appreciated my honesty and wanted to know how to get to the top of
the scale. Instead of getting angry, they were glad that someone had
the courage to tell them just how bad things had gotten and to offer
help in fixing the problems. Many times, top managers are isolated
from real problems by lower level managers that are worried about
what would happen if the truth got to top management. Several
local dealers had the opportunity to have told this customer the same
things, but failed to do so and allowed the customer to continue on
as always. Maybe they didn’t think to mention it, maybe they were
worried to mention it for fear of losing the account, maybe they
didn’t even notice, but for whatever reason nothing was ever said
until that day. The customer is now beginning the slow, but steady,
process of fixing problems and ensuring they stay fixed. These chang-
es will result in much greater safety, tremendous cost savings, and a
more efficient operation, but only because we told the truth regard-
less of the consequences. It is also one of several times I have felt that
we may have saved a life due to changes being implemented. Be sure
that when you are at customers locations you are looking for safety
related issues, mentioning them to the customer’s top management
and offering to help fix them; not just looking for a quick truck or
maintenance sale. The best salespeople are problem solvers, not door
to door salesman looking to make a quick dollar. Customers know
this deep down, even if you have to remind them from time to time.

EnerSys® NexSys® batteries receive UL EE rating classification
EnerSys®, the global leader in stored energy solutions for
industrial applications, recently received EE rating classification
from UL on its NexSys® batteries for powered industrial trucks.
The NexSys® battery pack for class III lift truck applications
has been specifically designed to meet UL requirements. “Typi-
cally the electrical components of a battery in class III lift trucks
are exposed,” said Chuck Bartlett, engineering manager at En-
erSys. “The NexSys® EE battery pack is completely enclosed for
use in such applications where flammable materials are stored,
including hair spray, paints and cleaning chemicals, just to name
a few.”
UL standards require that EE rated trucks protect against
inherent fire hazards and are provided with additional safeguards
to the electrical system to prevent emission of hazardous sparks
and limit surface temperatures. Most importantly, the electric
motors and all other electrical equipment must be completely
enclosed.1
To further enhance the EE rated product, EnerSys has incor-
porated an onboard charger into the battery pack to provide
plug-in anywhere convenience, enabling opportunity charging
while optimizing battery life.
“EnerSys takes an innovative systems approach to motive
power applications, always finding intelligent ways to boost
efficiency and productivity,” explains Chad Uplinger, general
manager, specialty markets at EnerSys. “The NexSys® battery
and charger system enables full recharging in less than five hours
and eliminates downtime, acid exposure as well as the need for
watering. Now with EE rating classification, we’re able to expand
and offer this advanced technology into additional class 3 truck
applications.”
NexSys® batteries by EnerSys are manufactured with Thin
Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology, using only the highest
purity lead in the positive and negative plates and a very high
purity sulfuric acid to minimize the potential risk of corrosion
and sulfation common to conventional lead acid batteries. This
design enables more plates to fit in the battery, providing more
power in 30 percent less space than conventional lead acid bat-
teries. Virtually maintenance-free, they feature Absorbed Glass
Mat (AGM) separators that provide high electrolyte absorption
and stability to help enhance cyclic capability.

Posidyne® long coupled clutch/brakes
reduce motor shaft
Posidyne® long coupled C-Face
clutch brakes from Force Control
Industries are an excellent option
for high cycle (50 to 300 CPM)
applicationsbecausetheyeliminate
the damage to keyways and motor
shafts that commonly occur.
When indexing with a clutch
brake, each clutch engagement transfers a torque spike to the connection
between the motor shaft and the input shaft of the clutch brake. High
cycle applications can cause continuous, severe, hammering on the shaft
connection of the motor to the clutch brake. For convenience and ease of
assembly, a standard C-Face connection is often used. In this arrangement,
the motor shaft installs into the hollow bore of the clutch brake input shaft.
However, the loose fit required for ease of assembly causes all of the torque
to transfer through the key and keyway, resulting is early failure.

New ergonomic casters put safety first
Hamilton Caster is proud to announce the new
patented Ergo-X2 Caster Series designed to reduce
the force needed to push or pull carts. The new
patented swivel caster design features two precision
machined offsetting ball races in a compact
assembly to minimize one of the final unresolved
issues with swivel casters: lock up. Lock up in this
context occurs when the cart is brought to rest and
at least two casters rotate to positions in which two
or more wheels become substantially misaligned.
A typical swivel assembly in a caster has only one
pivot point. The Ergo-X2 Caster essentially provides a second pivot point that
reduces the startup force to get the cart moving when lock up is present.

Safe-T-Signal helps make blind
intersections corners safer
Blind corners inside facilities
just got safer with the
introduction of the Safe-T-
Signal intersection warning
system by Rite-Hite. The
ceiling-mounted system
alerts workers when traffic
is approaching from other
directions using LED lights
in the shape of red stop signs
(octagon) and amber yield
(triangle) signs. “Intersections with blind corners can be dangerous, especially in
areas where workers and materials handling equipment are present,” said Andy
Olson, Rite-Hite marketing manager. “The Safe-T-Signal helps make those areas
safer by providing a clear signal in all directions so workers know if the intersection
is safe to enter or if they should yield or stop to wait for other traffic to proceed.”

pleased to announce that it has acquired the business of Petrowsky
Auctioneers, significantly enhancing its market presence in the
New England region.
Petrowsky's strong focus on customer relationships, trusted auc-
tion brand and well-established market presence in New England
will strengthen Ritchie Bros. offering in this important region,
said Ravi Saligram, CEO of Ritchie Bros. Sammy Piotrkowski has
built a tremendous auction platform over nearly 40 years by devel-
oping and maintaining a tremendous customer focus. Petrowsky
Auctions is a highly complementary business that will broaden
our base of equipment sellers. We look forward to welcoming the
Petrowsky team to Ritchie Bros. and continuing their history of
great customer service and seller solutions.
Petrowsky was founded nearly 40 years ago by Sammy Piotrkow-
ski, a driving force behind the business' growth. Based in North
Franklin, Connecticut, Petrowsky Auctioneers sold nearly US$50
million worth of equipment and other assets at auctions in 2015,
mostly in the New England region. Catering largely to equipment
sellers in the construction and transportation industries, Petrows-
ky's auction sales are well aligned with Ritchie Bros.' sector focus.
In addition, Petrowsky also serves customers selling assets in the
underground utility, waste recycling, marine, and commercial real
estate industries. The business operates one permanent auction site,
in North Franklin, which will continue to hold auctions, and also
specializes in off-site auctions held on the land of the consignor. All
Petrowksy auctions are also simulcast live online, allowing online
bidders to participate.
The Petrowsky brand will be maintained as a brand extension
within the Ritchie Bros. family of brands, given its strong and loyal
customer base, and reputable brand within its established markets.
Ritchie Bros. has purchased the assets of Petrowsky Auction-
eers Inc. for cash consideration of US$7 million, and has secured
employment agreements with current Petrowsky employees. Ad-
ditional consideration may be provided, contingent upon certain
operating performance targets being achieved over the next three
years. Sammy Piotrkowski, Founder of Petrowsky Auctioneers, will
continue to lead this business for Ritchie Bros.

As is often the case, many battery packs are left
unattended, and fall into a severely discharged state.
Many chargers on the market will not turn on in this
condition. The MotiveAider instantly raises the voltage
level of 24, 36, 48, and 72 volt lead acid packs so that
they will. This eliminates the need to disassemble packs,
or charge batteries independently.

KION North America and
Equipment Depot redefine
partnership
As part of each company's long-term growth strategy, KION
North America and Equipment Depot have mutually agreed to
redefine their manufacturer/distributor partnership.
Effective July 26, Equipment Depot of Illinois and Equip-
ment Depot of Pennsylvania will transition from full Linde
Dealer to authorized Linde parts and service providers.
Rather than cutting ties entirely, we decided it was in the
best of both companies to instead focus our efforts on select
key markets, said Michael Gore, vice president of sales for
KION North America.
In addition to remaining an authorized Linde dealership for
the Greater Houston area, Equipment Depot of Texas will now
also carry the Baoli brand, the group's newest line of forklifts.
An entirely new brand to the North American marketplace,
Baoli products are designed to meet the needs of the economy
segment of the U.S. market.
With an established history in Ohio, Equipment Depot
of Ohio will remain an authorized Linde dealership. Distin-
guished for their innovative industrial technology, the Linde
brand has been has been a fixture in the North American
material handling equipment market for over 150 years.
This arrangement allows us to keep the focus on our cus-
tomers by maintaining our best-in-class sales and services solu-
tions as we make this transition, said David Turner, member
of the executive board of Pon Holdings and president, CEO of
Equipment Depot.
With newly defined parameters and clear objectives, KION
North America and Equipment Depot look forward to a suc-
cessful future as continued partners.

WTDC Foreign Trade Zone
selects National Lift Truck
Service for new Forklift
agreement
WTDC, a
Miami-based
Foreign Trade
Zone and Lo-
gistics company,
has selected
National Lift
Truck Service
as its preferred
vendor for fork-
lift equipment and maintenance. National Lift Truck Service
is an authorized dealer for CLARK forklifts, WTDC's forklift
of choice. Sean P. Gazitua, WTDC Vice President, and Eddie
Alvarez, National Lift Truck Service Executive Vice President
of Sales, brokered the multi-year deal for eight new CLARK
forklifts consisting of five vertical double reach lift trucks
and three sit-down forklifts. Each aisle of WTDC’s Foreign
Trade Zone is racked two rows deep, requiring extensive use of
double-reach lift trucks to pull inventory for their Duty Free
and Travel Retail Spirits clientele. We were impressed with the
value and capabilities of the double reach and sit-down fork-
lifts from CLARK, Gazitua said. We look forward to more
energy efficiency operating our FTZ with this new equipment
and to working with National Forklift as our equipment main-
tenance provider.

How to know if your racking
needs to be replaced
In a perfect world, there would
be no warehouse accidents. People,
product and pallet rack would all
be free from any threat of colli-
sions, collapses and the linger-
ing threat of unavoidable freak
accidents. Unfortunately, we live in
the real world, and although we’re
edging our way closer to perfect,
we’re not there yet. It’s likely over
the course of time that at least one
warehouse mishap will take place.
Many of these accidents occur
while a forklift operator is loading
or unloading product in or out of
a pallet rack system. The picture
below shows an extremely common sight in warehouse sight: a
frame that’s been indented as a result of a forklift collision. The
severity of an incident such as this can vary depending on the load
being supported by the frame and several other factors, but it’s clear
that some action would need to be taken after the initial accident.

But how do you know if you need to replace the damaged racking?
You could try assessing the damage and basing your decision on a
hunch, but a better way to figure out how to know if your racking
needs to be replaced is to reference the Rack Manufacturers Insti-
tute standards.
Should damaged pallet rack frames and
beams be replaced?
Before we jump to talking about whether or not you should
replace a pallet rack component, we want to touch on what to do
in the unfortunate case that an accident does take place. The Rack
Manufacturers Institute (RMI - www.mhi.org/rmi) Specification
says that, “Upon any visible damage, the pertinent portions of the
rack shall be unloaded immediately by the user…” This first part
is key to maintaining safety in the warehouse, because even if the
racking appears unwavering after the initial impact, it may be left
structurally unsound and could be unsafe to operate around. Once
the racking has been unloaded, RMI states that “the damaged
portion shall be adequately repaired or replaced.” Of course, the
viability of the component should be determined by someone with
the proper knowledge of pallet rack engineering. It’s also important
to note that using a repair kit instead of replacing an upright frame
automatically voids the product warranty for many rack manufac-

turers. With this in mind, more often than not it’s a good idea to
replace the component. As far as costs are concerned, replacing a
frame is often equal or lesser cost in the long run, and is more likely
to yield a safer setup.
RMI further states if the damage were to re-occur, the applica-
tion of the racks should be reviewed to see if modifications could
be made to lessen the severity or the frequency of the damage. In
other words, the best way to handle a warehouse racking accident
is to prevent it from happening in the first place. As always, forklift
driver training is essential.

This modification allows the
customer to handle large
diameter reels or rolls without
the fear of the unit rolling or
damaging the product.
Modifications made to the truck
include widening the forks to
accept the roll or reel, adding
the angles to the fork to cradle
the load perfectly and reinforcing
the linkage, battery compartment
and the overall construction of
the pallet truck.

  • 8. 8 September 2016 Material Handling Network www.mhnetwork.com It’s your business, do something about it Mike Marchev There is a thin line between “customer service” and being a doormat. Remember–you can’t be all things to all people. If there is one common refrain I hear (and if I’ve heard it once I’ve heard it a hundred times) it is: Potential clients contact me to milk me for as much information as they can before they head out to book their own vacation on the internet. It is your business and you can run it any way you so choose. If you have a fee, the best time to explain this is upfront. No- body likes surprises. Not me. Not you. Nobody! If your policy is to charge a “research fee” after the first ten minutes of dialogue, then it’s your obligation to do so. It’s your business. It’s your time. If you choose not to get paid for what you can offer clients, then whose fault is that? Remember that there will always be two types of people. Those who you can help, and those you can’t help. Of those you can help, there are also two types. Those who will be glad to pay you for your services, and those who will try to avoid paying you. Of these four types, it is your responsibility to hunt down more of the type you can help, and who are glad to pay you. If they’re not down right giddy about paying you, at least they will follow through. Please understand the following, (this sounds a lot easier than it is): I suppose the word “confidence” also comes into play. If you are truly “confident” in the role you play, then it should be easier to get paid for your services. There is no “system” per se, but if you feel that your knowl- edge is valuable, then no apology is needed for asking to be compensated. The problem arises when the individual agent either does not believe in their own value, or they are not adding any value to the relationship. And this brings us full-circle in today’s Big Idea. If you want to become more confident and more worthy of higher fees, then it just might behoove you to start reading more about your business and your competition. Make no mistake about it folks, you are in the marketing business first, and the travel business second. Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. • 16. 16 September 2016 Material Handling Network www.mhnetwork.com Industry News Five tips when you have five minutes with a prospect By Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE If you are on the phone, a webinar, or in person, and you have a few minutes with the executive, what do you say to keep on track and be professional? Here is an invaluable framework. Adapt it to your situation, and boost your confidence and credibility. Imagine that you have a satisfied client company for one of your offerings. You feel now is the best time to discuss your next and higher investment offering. The team, your main contact, is ready to view a product demonstration set for the next day. All your demos are delivered in a webinar. At 2 P.M. you get a call from your main contact who says “Great news! Tomorrow our boss, who is the real decision-maker, is going to be in our office. Rather than just showing our team what you have to offer, the boss said he would like to sit in on the first five minutes. I know you will do well.” Don’t panic. This is a great opportunity, and once you make a positive impact, the sales cycle is going to be cut short. You will not have to hear, “We love this, but now we have to convince our boss.” This is, however, now your number one priority to prepare. You may be seasoned, but take this seriously. Your sales manager is always telling you, “Sell to the C Suite.” This is your chance. Remember these five simple suggestions for sales success. 1. Build rapport before you speak. It is easier to connect if you can make eye contact with the client, so turn on your webcam to welcome everyone and then again when you answer questions. Although many professionals say they are not comfortable doing this, it has many benefits. Who can resist your friendly smile? You will look more confi- dent, and it is tougher to say no when they are looking at you. 2. Be prepared, and get to the point. Remember, with an executive you need to be clear, concise, credible, and able to articulate the bottom line of your message. The higher up the corporate ladder you go, the more quickly you need to get to the point and demonstrate value. As counterin- tuitive as it may seem, the less time you have in which to present your case, the longer you will need to prepare. You may have friendly chatter with the team before you get to business, but in this case every second counts. Be polite, respectful, and get to the point fast. 3. Remember you are not alone. Speak on behalf of your leadership. This way you can feel you are making a connec- tion with the position, even when you are not holding that position yourself. You will discover that this technique adds to your confidence. 4. Remind the executive they have already made a wise deci- sion by doing business with your company. Remind them that they have already researched your company and that they were comfortable enough to make you a vendor of choice. This is just a logical next step. 5. Make heroes of the team you are working with. These are your internal champions, and although they may not make the ultimate decision, they certainly have influence and can sabotage your sale. Your job is to work closely with the team or champion who will give you information. Do your research so that you are on target with your questions about their company and the approach the executive will most likely respond to. www.fripp.com TYGARD Machine Manufacturing Co. 300 Meadowlands Boulevard, Washington, PA 15301 USA Phone: 724-746-4500 • Fax: 724-746-5107 Email: info@Tygardclaw.com • www.Tygardclaw.com A Revolutionary Four-Way Layer Picking and Pallet Splitting Attachment TYGARD CLAW Model TC-600 S Patented Pivoting Arms Allow For Picking of Multiple Load Profiles Pressure Sensitive Pads Grip Products Firmly and Evenly Patented Single Guide Rail Design Patented Center Channel Eliminates Mast Stress Swivel Adapter Box Compensates for Uneven Floors Counterbalanced Side Shifter Allows Side Travel for Off Center Loads DEALER INQUIRES WELCOME

  • 21. www.mhnetwork.com Material Handling Network September 2016 21 Safety Corner How to advise your customers they need to make safety changes Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems When I started out in the material handling industry years ago, I was very lucky to start out at a dealership with some excellent and patient managers, who took the time to teach and coach me in the right way to work with customers. I started in aftermarket and moved into truck sales and major accounts over my career at the dealership. During that time, I learned that you must tell the customers the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, no matter how bad it seems. You were allowed to be diplomatic and sympathetic in telling it, but none the less, it had to be told regard- less of the consequences to the salesperson or the dealership. That was a valuable lesson and one that I had to apply recently when working with a new customer. During my first audit of their material handling fleet for safety and functionality, I found a number of very serious issues, I literally saw 30 accident and injury pictures which would scare you to death and found the systems that should prevent these types of issues were broken, and had been for some time. I was called into a meeting with the corporate safety manager, the facility manager, his operations manager and the maintenance manager along with a number of their forklift trainers. The top two managers were new to the facility and they had both just come from a company with an excellent safety program. Their first question was “How did we do?” to which I said “You are very lucky to have not had a forklift fatality yet.” That was definitely not what they expected to hear and it turned the meeting’s tone from casual to deadly serious in about five seconds. They asked me to rate them from 1-10, with 1 being the worst location I had ever visited and 10 representing the best, from a forklift safety standpoint. They got a 2 on the scale of 10. At that point, I fully expected I might be flying back home early without completing the project, but to my relief they said they appreciated my honesty and wanted to know how to get to the top of the scale. Instead of getting angry, they were glad that someone had the courage to tell them just how bad things had gotten and to offer help in fixing the problems. Many times, top managers are isolated from real problems by lower level managers that are worried about what would happen if the truth got to top management. Several local dealers had the opportunity to have told this customer the same things, but failed to do so and allowed the customer to continue on as always. Maybe they didn’t think to mention it, maybe they were worried to mention it for fear of losing the account, maybe they didn’t even notice, but for whatever reason nothing was ever said until that day. The customer is now beginning the slow, but steady, process of fixing problems and ensuring they stay fixed. These chang- es will result in much greater safety, tremendous cost savings, and a more efficient operation, but only because we told the truth regard- less of the consequences. It is also one of several times I have felt that we may have saved a life due to changes being implemented. Be sure that when you are at customers locations you are looking for safety related issues, mentioning them to the customer’s top management and offering to help fix them; not just looking for a quick truck or maintenance sale. The best salespeople are problem solvers, not door to door salesman looking to make a quick dollar. Customers know this deep down, even if you have to remind them from time to time. • 24. 24 September 2016 Material Handling Network www.mhnetwork.com Industry News EnerSys® NexSys® batteries receive UL EE rating classification EnerSys®, the global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, recently received EE rating classification from UL on its NexSys® batteries for powered industrial trucks. The NexSys® battery pack for class III lift truck applications has been specifically designed to meet UL requirements. “Typi- cally the electrical components of a battery in class III lift trucks are exposed,” said Chuck Bartlett, engineering manager at En- erSys. “The NexSys® EE battery pack is completely enclosed for use in such applications where flammable materials are stored, including hair spray, paints and cleaning chemicals, just to name a few.” UL standards require that EE rated trucks protect against inherent fire hazards and are provided with additional safeguards to the electrical system to prevent emission of hazardous sparks and limit surface temperatures. Most importantly, the electric motors and all other electrical equipment must be completely enclosed.1 To further enhance the EE rated product, EnerSys has incor- porated an onboard charger into the battery pack to provide plug-in anywhere convenience, enabling opportunity charging while optimizing battery life. “EnerSys takes an innovative systems approach to motive power applications, always finding intelligent ways to boost efficiency and productivity,” explains Chad Uplinger, general manager, specialty markets at EnerSys. “The NexSys® battery and charger system enables full recharging in less than five hours and eliminates downtime, acid exposure as well as the need for watering. Now with EE rating classification, we’re able to expand and offer this advanced technology into additional class 3 truck applications.” NexSys® batteries by EnerSys are manufactured with Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology, using only the highest purity lead in the positive and negative plates and a very high purity sulfuric acid to minimize the potential risk of corrosion and sulfation common to conventional lead acid batteries. This design enables more plates to fit in the battery, providing more power in 30 percent less space than conventional lead acid bat- teries. Virtually maintenance-free, they feature Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) separators that provide high electrolyte absorption and stability to help enhance cyclic capability. www.enersys.com Hirschmann (PAT) names Stevenson Crane Service, Inc. as new Premier Dealer Hirschmann Automation and Control (PAT), Chambers- burg, PA has named Stevenson Crane Service, Inc. as the new premier dealer for Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Proof Test plus records data gathered by a Radiolink plus load cell, load shackle or compression load cell, for example. It then creates a pass or fail certificate that includes test data and graphs charting data from the load versus time throughout a test. When indexing with a clutch brake, each clutch engagement transfers a torque spike to the connection between the motor shaft and the input shaft of the clutch brake. High cycle applications can cause continuous, severe, hammering on the shaft connection of the motor to the clutch brake. For convenience and ease of assembly, a standard C-Face connection is often used. In this arrangement, the motor shaft installs into the hollow bore of the clutch brake input shaft. However, the loose fit required for ease of assembly causes all of the torque to transfer through the key and keyway, resulting is early failure. www.forcecontrol.com AMETEK Prestolite Power delivers data to 3PL companies AMETEK Prestolite Power announced it is providing value to 3PL companies such as UPS Supply Chain Solutions, XPO Logistics, UTi Worldwide, DHL Supply Chain, CEVA Logistics and GENCO. The new patented swivel caster design features two precision machined offsetting ball races in a compact assembly to minimize one of the final unresolved issues with swivel casters: lock up. Lock up in this context occurs when the cart is brought to rest and at least two casters rotate to positions in which two or more wheels become substantially misaligned. A typical swivel assembly in a caster has only one pivot point. The Ergo-X2 Caster essentially provides a second pivot point that reduces the startup force to get the cart moving when lock up is present. www.hamiltoncaster.com Safe-T-Signal helps make blind intersections corners safer Blind corners inside facilities just got safer with the introduction of the Safe-T- Signal intersection warning system by Rite-Hite. The ceiling-mounted system alerts workers when traffic is approaching from other directions using LED lights in the shape of red stop signs (octagon) and amber yield (triangle) signs. “Intersections with blind corners can be dangerous, especially in areas where workers and materials handling equipment are present,” said Andy Olson, Rite-Hite marketing manager. “The Safe-T-Signal helps make those areas safer by providing a clear signal in all directions so workers know if the intersection is safe to enter or if they should yield or stop to wait for other traffic to proceed.” www.ritehite.com

Petrowsky's strong focus on customer relationships, trusted auc- tion brand and well-established market presence in New England will strengthen Ritchie Bros. offering in this important region, said Ravi Saligram, CEO of Ritchie Bros. Sammy Piotrkowski has built a tremendous auction platform over nearly 40 years by devel- oping and maintaining a tremendous customer focus. Petrowsky Auctions is a highly complementary business that will broaden our base of equipment sellers. We look forward to welcoming the Petrowsky team to Ritchie Bros. and continuing their history of great customer service and seller solutions. Petrowsky was founded nearly 40 years ago by Sammy Piotrkow- ski, a driving force behind the business' growth. Based in North Franklin, Connecticut, Petrowsky Auctioneers sold nearly US$50 million worth of equipment and other assets at auctions in 2015, mostly in the New England region. Catering largely to equipment sellers in the construction and transportation industries, Petrows- ky's auction sales are well aligned with Ritchie Bros.' sector focus. In addition, Petrowsky also serves customers selling assets in the underground utility, waste recycling, marine, and commercial real estate industries. The business operates one permanent auction site, in North Franklin, which will continue to hold auctions, and also specializes in off-site auctions held on the land of the consignor. All Petrowksy auctions are also simulcast live online, allowing online bidders to participate. The Petrowsky brand will be maintained as a brand extension within the Ritchie Bros. family of brands, given its strong and loyal customer base, and reputable brand within its established markets. Ritchie Bros. has purchased the assets of Petrowsky Auction- eers Inc. for cash consideration of US$7 million, and has secured employment agreements with current Petrowsky employees. Ad- ditional consideration may be provided, contingent upon certain operating performance targets being achieved over the next three years. Sammy Piotrkowski, Founder of Petrowsky Auctioneers, will continue to lead this business for Ritchie Bros. www.rbauction.com CORPORATION TM uick hargeBattery Pack Recovery unit MotiveAider By THE NEW As is often the case, many battery packs are left unattended, and fall into a severely discharged state. Effective July 26, Equipment Depot of Illinois and Equip- ment Depot of Pennsylvania will transition from full Linde Dealer to authorized Linde parts and service providers. Rather than cutting ties entirely, we decided it was in the best of both companies to instead focus our efforts on select key markets, said Michael Gore, vice president of sales for KION North America. In addition to remaining an authorized Linde dealership for the Greater Houston area, Equipment Depot of Texas will now also carry the Baoli brand, the group's newest line of forklifts. An entirely new brand to the North American marketplace, Baoli products are designed to meet the needs of the economy segment of the U.S. market. With an established history in Ohio, Equipment Depot of Ohio will remain an authorized Linde dealership. Distin- guished for their innovative industrial technology, the Linde brand has been has been a fixture in the North American material handling equipment market for over 150 years. This arrangement allows us to keep the focus on our cus- tomers by maintaining our best-in-class sales and services solu- tions as we make this transition, said David Turner, member of the executive board of Pon Holdings and president, CEO of Equipment Depot. With newly defined parameters and clear objectives, KION North America and Equipment Depot look forward to a suc- cessful future as continued partners. www.kiongroup.com WTDC Foreign Trade Zone selects National Lift Truck Service for new Forklift agreement WTDC, a Miami-based Foreign Trade Zone and Lo- gistics company, has selected National Lift Truck Service as its preferred vendor for fork- lift equipment and maintenance. • 34. 34 September 2016 Material Handling Network www.mhnetwork.com Network - how to How to know if your racking needs to be replaced In a perfect world, there would be no warehouse accidents. People, product and pallet rack would all be free from any threat of colli- sions, collapses and the linger- ing threat of unavoidable freak accidents. Unfortunately, we live in the real world, and although we’re edging our way closer to perfect, we’re not there yet. It’s likely over the course of time that at least one warehouse mishap will take place. Many of these accidents occur while a forklift operator is loading or unloading product in or out of a pallet rack system. The picture below shows an extremely common sight in warehouse sight: a frame that’s been indented as a result of a forklift collision. The severity of an incident such as this can vary depending on the load being supported by the frame and several other factors, but it’s clear that some action would need to be taken after the initial accident. You could try assessing the damage and basing your decision on a hunch, but a better way to figure out how to know if your racking needs to be replaced is to reference the Rack Manufacturers Insti- tute standards. Should damaged pallet rack frames and beams be replaced? Before we jump to talking about whether or not you should replace a pallet rack component, we want to touch on what to do in the unfortunate case that an accident does take place. The Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI - www.mhi.org/rmi) Specification says that, “Upon any visible damage, the pertinent portions of the rack shall be unloaded immediately by the user…” This first part is key to maintaining safety in the warehouse, because even if the racking appears unwavering after the initial impact, it may be left structurally unsound and could be unsafe to operate around. Once the racking has been unloaded, RMI states that “the damaged portion shall be adequately repaired or replaced.” Of course, the viability of the component should be determined by someone with the proper knowledge of pallet rack engineering. It’s also important to note that using a repair kit instead of replacing an upright frame automatically voids the product warranty for many rack manufac-

With this in mind, more often than not it’s a good idea to replace the component. As far as costs are concerned, replacing a frame is often equal or lesser cost in the long run, and is more likely to yield a safer setup. RMI further states if the damage were to re-occur, the applica- tion of the racks should be reviewed to see if modifications could be made to lessen the severity or the frequency of the damage. In other words, the best way to handle a warehouse racking accident is to prevent it from happening in the first place. As always, forklift driver training is essential.
