11. โข Springfield Missouri is located on a karst
plateau, commonly known as the Springfield
Plateau.
โข The Springfield plateau consists of a stack of
Mississippian aged limestones of several
hundred feet in thickness.
โข The Springfield area has experienced fairly
rapid urbanization over the past 25 years,
resulting in numerous problems associated
with the interface between surface
development and the underlying karst.
13. โข Americaโs first National River, Buffalo National
River was established to preserve a very scenic
free-flowing stream in the southern Ozarks.
โข A significant section of the Buffalo River has
come under threat from animal wastes as a
result of the construction of a large Confined
Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) along a
major tributary.
โข The CAFO is entirely on karst.
โข The field trip will discuss this issue as well as
an overview of the karst development in this
area.
14. Potential Workshops
โข A geologic float trip down the Buffalo River
โข Cave Gating Basics
โข Cave Databases
โข Introduction to Dye Tracing
โข Introduction to bat acoustic survey
techniques.
