Creating a
 Résumé
  Business Technology
What is a résumé?
 A form, usually 1-2 pages
    in length, that organizes
    all the facts about an
    applicant related to the
job he or she is seeking.
Why do I need a
          résumé?
 To highlight your skills,
    experiences, and qualities
 To get an interview
 To appear professional and
    organized
 To have an advantage over
    other applicants
Where do I start?
 Uncover your skills, abilities,
    and special talents
 Ask yourself:
 What am I good at?
 What do I like to do?
 What are my good qualities?

Refer to pages 2-6 in The Resume Workbook
Step 2: Choose a Job
          Objective
 What is an objective?
 A statement that answers the question
What is the purpose of this résumé?
 An objective can be vague or
    specific.
 Vague: To obtain a position as a nurse
at a hospital in Southwest Missouri
 Specific: To obtain a position as a
full-time nurse in the Pediatrics unit
        at St. John’s Hospital.

Refer to page 7 in The Resume Workbook
Step 3: Learn the
    Requirements of That
             Job
 What education is required for
    this job?
 What skills are needed for this
    job?
 What experience is needed for
    this job?

Refer to page 8 of The Resume
    Workbook
Step 4: List Your
      Related Skills and
           Abilities
 Review all of your skills and
abilities you listed ( pages 3-
    6 in The Résumé Workbook)
 Decide which ones are most
    related to the skills and
    abilities needed for the job
    you are applying for

Now… Turn to page 10 in The Résumé Workbook
Step 5: Write One-
              Liners
 What is a one-liner?
     A one-line sentence describing how
you have already used the skills
and abilities that are needed for
the job you are applying for
 How do I write a one-liner?
 Always begin with an action verb
 Assisted students with homework and
          class work
 I helped kids with their homework

Pages 11-14 in The Résumé Workbook
Step 6 : List your work
             history
 Make a list of any work you’ve
    done or jobs you’ve held.
 List most recent work first.
 Include all work experience –
even if you didn’t get paid for
it or if it was short term.

Now you do it… Pages 15-16
Step 7: List your
    Education and Training
 Include:
 High School, city, state, and
        graduation year
 Any courses that could be related to
        your career
 Any special training you have received
         CPR
 GPA – but only if it is 3.0 or higher
     Leadership positions: club officer
        positions, etc.

Put it to use… Pages 17-18
Step 8: Summarize your
          key points
 Make a list of key points that your
future employer may want to know
    about you.
 Are you qualified for the job?

 Will you be a good fit for the
       job?
 Keep it to one-line for each piece
    of information
 Make sure your statements are
related to your job objective and is
supported by what you say in the
    Skills and Work History section
Step 9: Assemble your
        résumé
       Put it all together!

 Follow the steps on page
      20 to complete pages
            21 & 22
Step 10: Produce a
    Final One-Page Résumé
 Refer to other résumés as a guide
    (pages 24-28)
 Make your name the 1st thing you
    notice on the page
 Limit white space
 Be creative!
 Proofread, Proofread, Proofread!
 Have someone else look at it
Reflection
 What have you learned about résumés?
 How will this information help you in the
    future?
 What do you like about your résumé?
 What would you change about your
    résumé?

Use page 29 to write your Reflection
