Chapter 7: Memory and Studying: Retaining What You Learn
Every student experiences the frustration of working hard to remember something that
seems irrelevant.
• How do you handle this?
If I was in Norton’s situation I would of explain the situation to my parents and I would of
stayed at my parents and take college and life day by day and not rush into things.
• How should you handle it?
First by asking my parents for help and talking to my counselor in school and then by
getting my priorities straight.
• What memorization techniques do you resist trying?
I don’t like studying days or even weeks before a test is due. I much prefer to study hours
before the test or even minutes before the test, I prefer that because I have a tendency of
forgetting stuff and I procrastinate a lot so therefore I like to study hours nor minutes
before the test.
• Is it because they seem too unrelated to the information, or too goofy?
I just personally think that I have short term memory and I get distracted very quickly
therefore I will forget about things and when it comes to the moment of the test I would not
have what I’m supposed to have in my brain and that’s when I will start getting nervous
and hesitate and even get anxious and do poor in the test.
• What would you be willing to try?
I wouldn’t mind trying a study group or even asking for second opinions. For example what
Norton did was very smart. Having a study group and having other people look into your
work makes you feel better because it teaches you what you are doing wrong or right and
that’s how you learn from your mistakes. That’s how I learn my lesson on studying days
before a test is do, now I know that I’m better of studying hours before it.

2. • What does Norton’s story mean for you?
I think that no student can spend every second of class time taking courses that are
meaningful and inspiring. You will always experience different levels of motivation and even
education that’s why is good and even better when you have people to back you up and
give you that little bust of energy that will keep you up with everything.
• What effects can take you beyond your world?
The fact that I’m becoming a nurse and not joining the military instead that was a smart
move from my part, and now is only going to take me less than 5 years of school and I will
have my dream come true and nobody is going to stop me from perusing my dreams.
• What can you learn from Norton’s case about memory and study strategies?
That study groups can be helpful at times, for example Nortons case if it wasn’t for the
study group and its motivation he couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to make it to where he it
right now sometimes is better to ask for help and stay over hours with people that you
know they will help you better than going out in the streets and having some weird people
having you do stuff that will only lead you to jail and or even death.
• What can you learn from Norton about analytical, creative, and practical thinking?
With analytical thinking he was been too pessimist about things he was always thinking
negative and never gave himself the opportunity to actually experience what he wanted to
be in life till he decide and put his priorities straight and got with the study group. The study
group made him realizes that they was hope for him and therefore he become a successful
electrical engineer and even owns his own business at Boeblingen, Germany.
