12. The text is a narrative in written form. The purpose of this text type
is to amuse or entertain the readers. There are a few examples of narrative
texts ; namely folklores, fables, legends, and fairytales. Narrative texts often
contain moral values, which we can learn and apply in our daily lives.
A narrative text consists of four parts, as follows
1. Orientation
2. Complication
3. Resolution
4. reorientation

14. You met Sonia. She said the following to you:
“My uncle and aunt are fine.”
“I’m going to learn to drive.”
“My sister has quit her job.”
“I attended Tio’s party last Saturday.”
“I dont have enough money to buy a book.”
“I’m going away for a few days . I’ll call you when I get back.”
15. Later you tell a friend of yours about what Sonia had said.
You use Indirect or reported speech.
Sonia said that her uncle and aunt were fine.
Sonia said that she was going to learn to drive.
Sonia said that her sister had quit her job.
Sonia said that she had attended Tio’s party the previous
Saturday.
Sonia said that she didn’t have enough money to buy a book.
Sonia said that she was going away for a few days and would
call me when she got back.
16. Notes:
• If the main verb of the sentence is in the present (e.g. Says),
no change is made in the verb tense or modal adverb of time
in the noun clouse.
Example:
Direct : Prita says, “I always wake up early.”
Indirect : Prita says that she always wakes up early
17. Notes:
• It is not always necessary to change the verb when you use
reported speech. If you report something and it is still true,
you don’t need to change the verb.
Example:
Direct : Tri said, “Tokyo is more exciting than Jakarta.”
Indirect : Tri said that Tokyo is more exciting than Jakarta.
It also correct to change the verb into the past: Tri said that
Tokyo was more exciting than Jakarta.
18. The text is an example of
encouragement cards. Words of
encouragement for a friends
play a very important role in
motivating a friend to solve the
problems he or she is facing or
in helping comfort him or her
during hard times. Encouraging
words can become best gift for
your friend because when said
at the right moment,
encouraging words for friends
can change their lives too.
The text is a warning. A
warning often tells other
people to do or not to do
something. A warning is a
statement telling
somebody that something
bad or unpleasant may
happen, so they can avoid
it. A warning can also be a
statement telling
somebody that they may
be punished if they
continue to behave in a
particular way.
19. Ehen you feel like giving up
Remember why you held on for so long in the first place.
Keep fighting and believing,
I believe you can make your dream come true.
