According to Foucault, power and truth are braided together inseparably in a reciprocal relationship, hence his slash-term Power/Knowledge. Power/Knowledge is a complex system. “Truth’ is linked in a circular relation with systems of power which produce and sustain it, and to effects of power which it induces and which extend it. A 'regime' of truth” (Power/Knowledge, p.133). While understanding Foucault’s statement in its fullness is rather complex, what I want you to see is that Foucault views truth as something constructed or produced within power systems. Therefore truth is not objective;it is not regarded as an object. According to Foucault, “truth is a thing of this world.” Being able to determine what is true, we might say is the ultimate power move. Without the power to establish what is regarded as true, there is no power at all. He claims that “We cannot exercise power except through the production of truth.” (93) It is not just power that makes laws, Foucault suggests, it is truth that makes the laws (94).
