The document outlines the new primary school computing curriculum in the UK. It introduces key themes of computer science, information technology, and digital literacy. Children will learn to write computer programs from age 5 and safety online. Progression through the curriculum is described for key stages 1, 2 lower, and 2 upper with a focus on algorithms, programming, data, and networks. Managing the change requires staff training, hardware updates, best practices evaluation, and monitoring student work. Support is available from the Computing Learning Centre.

3. Key Themes
The subject of Computing replaces information and communication
technology (ICT)
Computer Science - Foundations
Information Technology - Applications
Digital Literacy - Implications
It will see children as young as five taught how to write and develop their
own computer programs as well as learn how to store and retrieve data
Internet safety will also be taught from the age of five
4. Progression KS1
Understand use of algorithms
Write & test simple programs
Use logical reasoning to make predictions
Organise, store, retrieve & manipulate data
Communicate online safely and respectfully
Recognise uses of IT outside of school
5. Progression LKS2
Design & write programs to achieve specific goals, including solving
problems
Use logical reasoning
Understand computer networks
Use internet safely and appropriately
Collect and present data appropriately
6. Progression UKS2
Design & write programs to solve problems
Use sequences, repetition, inputs, variables and outputs in programs
Detect & correct errors in programs
Understand uses of networks for collaboration & communication
Be discerning in evaluating digital content
7. Managing Change
Curriculum remodelling - embedding ‘ICT’
Staff training to develop skills in ‘coding’
Hardware/software ‘refresh’ to meet new requirements
Evaluating ‘best practice’
Pupil portfolios and monitoring work samples
Demonstration lessons
Assessment models
8. Managing Change
“The CLC staff are highly professional and have provided
help in issues that range from curriculum design, to solving
school based technical issues. They are a valuable resource,
which apart from providing children with high quality
educational experiences, also support teachers to improve
their own ICT capability”
