Talk delivered by Chris and Marc Burgauer to introduce Maturity Mapping. The talk was divided into 3 distinct talks. First an introduction the Wardley mapping followed by an introduction to Social Practice Theory. Then the bulk of the talk was on Maturity Mapping which integrates Wardley Mapping, Social Practice Theory and Cynefin to create context specific Maturity Models

Why Wardley Mapping?
• Creates a vocabulary enabling discussion of a complex system
• Sharing and comparing our perceptions and understanding of our context
• Visualising the environment, our position within the environment and
where we experience (or expect to experience) inertia
• Articulating and evaluating intention (as moves on the map) in context
• Capturing a point-in-time of the system under observation
Creates Shared Situational Awareness

What makes a map a map
Anchor - e.g. Lines of Longitude
and Latitude or a
compass showing North
Position - Location on the map
has meaning
Movement - The map informs
our options to move

Climatic Patterns (rules of the game)
Examples:
Everything evolves through supply and demand competition
No single method fits all
Higher order systems create new sources of value
Success breeds inertia

Doctrine - skills or habits
Examples:
Focus on user needs
Use contextually appropriate methods
Use a common language
Focus on outcomes, not outputs

Wardley Mapping
• Creates a vocabulary enabling discussion of a complex system
• Sharing and comparing our perceptions and understanding of our context
• Visualising the environment, our position within the environment and
where we experience (or expect to experience) inertia
• Articulating and evaluating intention (as moves on the map) in context

Creates Shared Situational Awareness

“when practices do come to depend
on each other (whether in sequence,
synchronisation, proximity or
necessary co-existence) they
constitute complexes, the emergent
characteristics of which cannot be
reduced to the individual practices in
which they are composed.”
Shove et al

practice as the central unit of inquiry

31. @chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
social practice theory
• elements of practice (meaning, material & competence)
• evolution of practice
• connections between practice (complex, bundle)
34. @chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
why might we be interested in maturity?
• Situational improvement (org/team/individual)
• Evaluation - consultant
• Determining capability to execute a strategic move/identify what needs improved to make the move
38. The trouble with maturity models...
• “Bias towards the model I.e. blindfold for context” - Marc Burgauer
• “what works for a ‘mature’ multinational is going to be counter productive for an
‘immature’ 30 person company’ - Adrian Howard
• “they’re suggesting a poor learning order, usually reflecting what’s easier to what’s
harder” - JasonYip

39. @chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
but... we do have a way of creating
situational awareness and making
context specific change
42. Context
The Big House company run a popular website for the housing market. One of
their teams has the responsibility for the search function and their mission is to
ensure home buyers “find the right home”.The team comprises of a product
owner, 3 back end developers, a dedicated front end developer, a user experience
designer and a tester. The team work with a separate team of DBAs and have an
Agile Coach supporting them.

52. Maturity… in the context being mapped
@chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
Concept Emerging Good Best
Certainty Poorly understood Rapid increases in learning
Rapid increases in use / fit for
purpose
Commonly understood (in
terms of use)
User perception
Different / confusing / exciting /
surprising
Leading edge / emerging
Common / disappointed if not
used or available
Standard / expected
Understanding
Poorly understood /
unpredictable
Increasing understanding /
development of measures
Increasing education / constant
refinement of needs / measures
Believed to be well defined /
stable / measurable
Knowledge management Uncertain Learning on use Learning on operation Known / accepted
Social Practice
we recognise the elements but
don’t know how to integrate
them
We have integrated the
elements
We have integrated the practice
into our way or working and
can regularly re-enact it
The practice is comfortably
integrated and we can build
new practice on top of it

54. Evolution vs Competence
• Wardley Maps show evolution in a global context
• Maturity Maps show maturity in the context of competence in our environment
• Maturity Maps reflect what we know of the world, they are specific to our world, because
either we might not know of others pursuing the same practice or because we have diverged
from global practices to accommodate differences in the environment specific to our context.
• What we really want though are categories for evolution that reflect the perspective of Social
Practice Theory in a local context
@chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
62. @chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
We know someone who knows how to do that.
Any of us could do that
We’d need to try a few things
We must act on now!
66. @chrisvmcd & @somesheep - Maturity Mapping #lascot
Summary
• Maturity Mapping provides a context specific use of your practices
• Approach from understanding user needs
• The Work To Be Done to serve the user needs
• Your understanding of how well developed your practices are in the
context of your environment
• Understand which practices need to be improved
• Understand (with Cynefin) how you can improve (movement)
