Reassignment to Tenured Faculty Position
Board of Regents' Policies, Section 9-12, Executive and Managerial Personnel Policies, Part ll,
Recruitment and Appointment of Executive and Managerial Personnel, C,, Appointments, 2(e).,
Reappointments, Reassignments and Non-Renewal of Appointments, provides that personnel
appointed to executive and managerial positions who have return rights to another University
position may be reassigned at any time during the appointment period to such former position upon
being given at least thirty (30) calendar days written notice by the appropriate administrator.
On May 17, 2A12, the Board of Regents approved your appointment as Chancellor, University of
Hawai'i at MEnoa, for the period of June 18,2012 through June 30, 2017, subject each year to
successful annual performance evaluations at the level of satisfactory or above.
On July 19, 2012, the Board approved tenure upon initial appointment for you at the rank of full
professor (l-5) in a fallback faculty position in the Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and
Physiology, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM).
On July 3,2014,1 provided you with an oral summary of my evaluation of your performance for the
2013-2014 academic year. On July 18, 2014, I delivered your formal written evaluation to you,
confirming my evaluation of your performance as less than satisfactory. Based on your evaluation
rating and the underlying performance issues, this memo is to notify you of your reassignment to
your tenured faculty 1 1-month professor (l-5) position effective September 1,2014.
The month prior to September 1, 2014 is a transition period as you prepare for your assignment to
your faculty position in JABSOM. Please use this time to work with Dean Jerris Hedges to discuss
the faculty assignment details. ln addition, while you will remain as Chancellor during this period,
your delegated authority as Chancellor, including authority delegated by Presidential delegation
memoranda or Executive Policy, is rescinded effective today. Action requests and documents for
Chancellor's approval shall be vetted by the respective Vice Chancellor and routed to my office for
final review and approval to help facilitate this transition for the campus. Documents and requests
regarding your office staff members shall also be submitted to my office for approval. A member of
my office team will work with your team to coordinate.
During this transition period, I will continue to meet with you to discuss pending matters. An effective
transition is critical for the campus and I ask that you make efforts to work with your students,
faculty, staff and administrators during this period.
