Technology Philosophy
Learning in a technology integrated classroom means learning in a classroom where the latest
technology is used to help convey and show and learn mathematics. Over the years, as technology
changes, the technology that the expression implies changes. Right now the new technology is the
mimio, the ipad, smart boards and other like items. A couple of years ago when I was going through
school, the big advancement was in calculators and how they could be displayed and document readers.
We had a few smart boards but the teachers did not know how to use them so they just lay dormant.
They also had figured out how to project the calculator onto a projector screen so that it was possible to
see exactly what the teacher was putting into the calculator, which was used a lot. Another new tool to
arise was the document camera. That was used so that when people were doing classwork and the
teacher wanted someone to show their solution, rather than take the time to write the whole solution
on the board, which for some problems would be lengthy, they could just flash it up on the document
camera and go over it in seconds.
Teaching in a technology integrated classroom means using the available technology in a
manner that aids in the students learning in mathematics and engages them. Most times I see it being
used as a way to teach students while getting away from the traditional lecture/note taking system. The
way technology helped me most as a student was being able to see things. Teachers drawing on boards,
especially math teachers, don’t always give an accurate representation of object or concepts, 3-D in
particular. Whereas teacher’s representations were subpar many computer images of those concepts
were very clear. And you can demonstrate concepts that are moving much better with technology than
not. I am worried about the overuse of technology though. While it is very useful in finding answers too
many questions quickly, I’ve noticed that once students know that the calculator can be used in a certain
situation, they tend to forget how to find that manually and with that how each part of finding it is
related. I’ll have to use it in the field to figure out more.
I want the students to have a good understanding of the concepts that are being taught in the
classroom and be able to apply them in the situations where they would be necessary to use. I want
them to use technology when appropriate and use it the right way. I also want them to know when
using that same technology is not appropriate and use the method that would best fit the situation. I
want them to do this because technology is awesome in the fact that it can easily find answers but it
isn’t always the most appropriate method. I want students to be able to identify the best method of
finding the answer and going at the question that way.
Implementation:
Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to
specific tasks
I would like to assess the students in different ways. I like to have portions of the test where
technology isn’t used to test the understanding of certain abilities. These problems won’t be too
difficult, only show me that they can do the asked skill proficiently. The other part of the test would
allow technology and test on a different level of understanding.
Inclusion:
Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared
decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of
others
Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of
technology and information
Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and
resources to support student success and innovation
