How Cohort Analysis
Improves Retention
A subset of behavioral analytics that
breaks down users into related groups
for analysis. These related groups,
or cohorts, usually share common
characteristics or experiences within
a defined time-span.

Cohort analysis is a tool to
measure user engagement over time so
you know whether user engagement is
actually improving or is only appearing
to improve because of growth.
Why Should I
Care About
Cohort Analysis?
This retention table tells us:
• What % of people in a cohort are
coming back to the app after 3 days
and so on, revealing the quality of your
onboarding experience.
• How often users return and how
valuable that cohort is. This can be
linked to quality of the product,
operations, and customer support.

Group users by when they signed up
for your product.
Acquisition cohorts are great for
identifying trends and where churn
happens, but apart from those two,
it’s hard to get actionable insights.

Used to monitor how long different
cohorts stay active in your app after
they perform certain actions.
Group users by the behaviors they have
(or haven’t) taken in your app within a
given time period.
From this data, you can develop a
systematic, quantitative approach to
get users to fall in love with your app –
and make it happen again and again.
