Friends,
The escape of the violent patient from the Hawai`i State Hospital, who committed
criminal acts many years ago, has confused, frightened, and angered many of us.
The important question now is, “What can we do to make sure this never happens
again to ensure the safety of our families?”.
First, I have proposed an immediate 50% increase in full time security at HSH, which
should continue at least until all internal security and safety assessments have been
completed by the Department of Public Safety.
Second, that the state should accelerate completion of the new 144 bed forensic
facility by an additional year, and sooner if possible, expediting the project's
completion to early 2020.
I know that we can rise to the occasion and fnish our new forensic facility quickly
without sacrifcing quality.
Lastly, we need to freeze the return and admission of highly aggressive patients to the
hospital, until they can be admitted to the new forensic facility, which will be able to
safely and adequately treat those with violent mental illness.
As always, I welcome your feedback and ideas.
Josh
