The department of transportation maintains the public way, 23% of the cities land area. So how we go about the business of designing and maintaining projects makes a difference. But how do we, as the conference agenda suggests, design our transportation infrastructure in an “environmentally concious manner where the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is not compromised”. If sustainability is a process or state that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely, “self sustaining”, Is there such a thing as a self sustaining transportation project, and if so what would it look like and what would it take to make one?
Can we make this the image from the UC Davis presentation, it is a great before and after

So why does all of this matter All of life is contained within the biosphere, the global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships, at a minimum 5, 400 meters above sea level to at least 9000 meters below sea level is the equivalent of less than the thickness of a piece of saran rap on a basketball. All of the worlds biomass accounts for 3.7 kg carbon per square metre of the earth’s surface, making a total of about 1900 gigatonnes of carbon. We are pumping 70 million tons of carbon a day into the atmosphere Turning the world into venus We must accommodate growing populations and the inherent iron is that the only way to do this is to challenge the creed of expedential growth, should ADT’s always go up? As David Susaki said, “Nothing within a finite system can grow forever, this is what ecology teaches us. Stedy growth forever is the creed of the cancer cell and economists and the result is the same, death. Test tube example
