Local government provides important services like streetlights and road maintenance that citizens benefit from but may take for granted. To improve citizen engagement, governments must help citizens understand their role and value in local governance, see the critical work of maintaining infrastructure, and hold governments accountable to continuously improve services. Framing civic participation and government functions in a way that emphasizes their benefits to citizens like popular technology may increase appreciation and involvement.
