Be a Servant to the God King - Acts 4:32 - 5:14 - June 2nd, 2013
1.
2. Acts 1:1-8
In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about
all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until
the day he was taken up to heaven, after
giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to
the apostles he had chosen.
3 After his suffering, he presented himself to
them and gave many convincing proofs that
he was alive. He appeared to them over a
period of forty days and spoke about the
kingdom of God.
3. Acts 1:1-8
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with
them, he gave them this command: “Do not
leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my
Father promised, which you have heard me
speak about. 5 For John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized with
the Holy Spirit.”
4. Acts 1:1-8
6 Then they gathered around him and asked
him, “Lord, are you at this time going to
restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the
times or dates the Father has set by his own
authority. 8 But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be
my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
5. Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to
prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many
wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
44 All the believers were together and had everything
in common. 45 They sold property and possessions
to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they
continued to meet together in the temple courts.
They broke bread in their homes and ate together
with glad and sincere hearts,
47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the
people. And the Lord added to their number daily
those who were being saved.
6. Acts 4:32-35
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind.
No one claimed that any of their possessions
was their own, but they shared everything they
had. 33 With great power the apostles
continued to testify to the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so
powerfully at work in them all 34 that there
were no needy persons among them. For from
time to time those who owned land or houses
sold them, brought the money from the sales
35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was
distributed to anyone who had need.

8. Genesis 1:27-29
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be
fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth
and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea
and the birds in the sky and over every living
creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-
bearing plant on the face of the whole earth
and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.
They will be yours for food.
9. Genesis 2:8-9, 15-17
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in
the east, in Eden; and there he put the man
he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all
kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees
that were pleasing to the eye and good for
food. In the middle of the garden were the
tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil.
10. Genesis 2:8-9, 15-17
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in
the Garden of Eden to work it and take care
of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the
man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the
garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil, for when
you eat from it you will certainly die.”
11.
12. Genesis 3:17b-19
“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”

17. 1 Chronicles 17:7b-10a, 16-22
‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from
the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed
you ruler over my people Israel. 8 I have been with
you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all
your enemies from before you. Now I will make your
name like the names of the greatest men on earth.9
And I will provide a place for my people Israel and
will plant them so that they can have a home of
their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked
people will not oppress them anymore, as they did
at the beginning 10 and have done ever since the
time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will
also subdue all your enemies.
18. 1 Chronicles 17:7b-10a, 16-22
16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord,
and he said: “Who am I, Lord God, and what is my
family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And
as if this were not enough in your sight, my God,
you have spoken about the future of the house of
your servant. You,Lord God, have looked on me
as though I were the most exalted of men.
18 “What more can David say to you for honoring
your servant? For you know your servant, 19
Lord. For the sake of your servant and according
to your will, you have done this great thing and
made known all these great promises.
19. 1 Chronicles 17:7b-10a, 16-22
20 “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no
God but you, as we have heard with our own
ears.21 And who is like your people Israel—the
one nation on earth whose God went out to
redeem a people for himself, and to make a
name for yourself, and to perform great and
awesome wonders by driving out nations from
before your people, whom you redeemed from
Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your
very own forever, and you, Lord, have become
their God.
20. 1 Chronicles 21:1-2
Satan rose up against Israel and incited David
to take a census of Israel. 2 So David said to
Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go
and count the Israelites from Beersheba to
Dan. Then report back to me so that I may
know how many there are.”
21.
22. Acts 4:36-37
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the
apostles called Barnabas (which means “son
of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned
and brought the money and put it at the
apostles’ feet.
23. Acts 5:1-14
Now a man named Ananias, together with his
wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back
part of the money for himself, but brought the
rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
24. Acts 5:1-14
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that
Satan has so filled your heart that you have
lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for
yourself some of the money you received for
the land? 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it
was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the
money at your disposal? What made you
think of doing such a thing? You have not lied
just to human beings but to God.”
25. Acts 5:1-14
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and
died. And great fear seized all who heard
what had happened. 6 Then some young
men came forward, wrapped up his body,
and carried him out and buried him.
26. Acts 5:1-14
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not
knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her,
“Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got
for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to
test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the
men who buried your husband are at the door,
and they will carry you out also.”
27. Acts 5:1-14
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and
died. Then the young men came in and, finding
her dead, carried her out and buried her beside
her husband.11 Great fear seized the whole
church and all who heard about these events.
28. Henry Blackaby
“When you believe that nothing significant
can happen through you, you have said
more about your belief in God than you
have about yourself.”
29. Acts 5:1-14
12 The apostles performed many signs and
wonders among the people. And all the
believers used to meet together in Solomon’s
Colonnade.
13 No one else dared join them, even though they
were highly regarded by the people.
14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women
believed in the Lord and were added to their
number.
