While science and religion often come into conflict over explanations of the origin of the universe and basic principles, both also play important roles. Science provides the most concrete explanations we have based on evidence rather than dogma, but should not become a new god or turn people into objects of experiment. Religion is important for unifying people and can provide hope and refuge during difficult times. Overall, science and religion will likely continue influencing people in different ways as representations of hope.
1. Science vs. religion – an everlasting conflict
How was the Universe born? Was it God… or was it just a “big bang”? While it is true that one divinity switching on the light, in the middle of the darkness, is hard to believe, it is equally unreal to think that, somehow, one day energy decided to turn into quarks.
As a matter of fact, due to all the new developments in technology and scientific achievements, some of the most basic principles of religion are now under threat, which leads to a permanent conflict between science and religion. “Will science overcome it? Or will the religious beliefs persist?” – these are just some of the questions troubling the minds of many people all over the world.
First of all, even though science does not explain every single thing, it is the most concrete certainty we have and, unlike religion, it is not based in dogmas but always willing to be continuously changed. Besides, no sooner does the CERN demystify the beginning of the Universe, than the concept of God will dramatically change forever – that image we create of an omnipotent man making an entire Universe from nothing will be just a silly joke.
However, don’t you think that trying to make everything objective and clear will turn us into objects wrapped to experiments and neglecting the power of our minds? Please, do not turn science into our new God! It is supposed to encourage us to use our brain to think, instead of letting it for the scientists while assuming that everything they show us is the ultimate truth.
Besides, religion plays such a crucial role in unifying humans, that it is no longer a collection of beliefs and thoughts, but the identity of all the different peoples around the world. For instance, have you ever realized how many people come to Fátima every year to pray altogether for a miracle that happened some years ago? Have you ever wondered how powerful and fulfilling it is for someone to share such a moment with thousands of Catholics?
To sum up then, it is undeniable to admit that science is a reality that changed the past, affects the future and will make our future brighter. Because it does not only believe in our potential as human beings, but also provides us all the tools we need to build our destiny. However, you should always keep in mind that, in those most terrible moments in which you realize that your life is no longer under control, it is SO great to believe that there is someone who transcends us looking for you! Science and religion will keep on fighting for glory, because both of them represent, even if in different ways, our hope and the refuge for our weakness.
Written by:
Bernardo Lemos
João Neves
Maria Inês Canha
Mariana Leite
12ºD
