About the Western Canadian
Auditing Roundtable
(WCAR) and Waste Facility
Environmental Review
(WFER) Process
The WCAR is a non-profit organization of
industry members dedicated to the
advancement of health, safety, and
environmental auditing.
Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of
information and influence the
development of Environmental,
Health and Safety (EH&S) Management
Systems and the practice of EH&S
auditing processes in Western Canada.
With this goal in mind, CPANS and
WCAR have come together to offer our
members and the scientific community
this exciting opportunity.
If your company is interested in
becoming a member of WCAR, please
contact Michael Vaters @
mvaters@enmax.com.
What is the WFER?
The Waste Facility Environmental
Review Process (WFER) is a method of
collecting information on waste facilities
and transporters that may be used by
each waste generator as the basis for
their risk assessment and eventual use
of a waste facility or transporter.
While waste companies may take title
to our wastes and indemnify us, both
the legislation and civil precedents still
leave the generator subject to the risk of
expensive remediation. A generator
‘owns’ wastes from cradle to grave.
Performing risk assessments on the
waste facilities that we use forms part
of our due diligence. Establishing due
diligence not only aids in defending
against litigation, but if done well, helps
companies avoid getting into a situation
where litigation is considered.
The development of the Waste Facility
Environmental Review Process has been
sponsored by the Western Canadian
Auditing Roundtable (WCAR).
