Crazy Handshakes
• In pairs, develop and practice a crazy
handshake.
• Then split and pair up with someone else, teach
each other your original handshakes and create a
new one.
5 Minute Freewrite about a Puzzle or Problem
• Write as fast as you can, without thinking.
• If your flow stops, leave a space and immediately begin again
• Write for the full 5 minutes
• Write past the point where you feel you have nothing to say
• Find something interesting to explore
• No mistakes are possible; the only mistake you can make is not to
write
• Keep your hand moving
• Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, or grammar
• Lists are OK
• Think of it as play
• Messy is good
• Sentences are overrated
Brainstorming Possibilities Protocol
Share a puzzle/problem and gather possible solutions/responses
Time: 4 x 10-minute “rounds”
1. Presenter briefly identifies the puzzle or problem and provides a little context.
(Not more than 2 minutes)
2. Group asks a few brief clarifying questions. (2 minutes)
3. Group brainstorms ideas, solutions, resources, and possible ways of responding. (5
minutes)
• State ideas succinctly. (No discussion)
• No evaluating others’ ideas.
• Keep the comments flowing.
Note: Presenter does not participate in the brainstorm.
4. Presenter thanks the group for their thoughts (but does not give a response).
5. Group members reflect on how well they followed the guidelines and what might
improve the process in the next round. (1 minute)

  • 1. What If Professional Learning was about Creating a Culture of Innovation?
  • 2. Crazy Handshakes • In pairs, develop and practice a crazy handshake. • Then split and pair up with someone else, teach each other your original handshakes and create a new one.
  • 3. 5 Minute Freewrite about a Puzzle or Problem • Write as fast as you can, without thinking. • If your flow stops, leave a space and immediately begin again • Write for the full 5 minutes • Write past the point where you feel you have nothing to say • Find something interesting to explore • No mistakes are possible; the only mistake you can make is not to write • Keep your hand moving • Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, or grammar • Lists are OK • Think of it as play • Messy is good • Sentences are overrated
  • 4. Brainstorming Possibilities Protocol Share a puzzle/problem and gather possible solutions/responses Time: 4 x 10-minute “rounds” 1. Presenter briefly identifies the puzzle or problem and provides a little context. (Not more than 2 minutes) 2. Group asks a few brief clarifying questions. (2 minutes) 3. Group brainstorms ideas, solutions, resources, and possible ways of responding. (5 minutes) • State ideas succinctly. (No discussion) • No evaluating others’ ideas. • Keep the comments flowing. Note: Presenter does not participate in the brainstorm. 4. Presenter thanks the group for their thoughts (but does not give a response). 5. Group members reflect on how well they followed the guidelines and what might improve the process in the next round. (1 minute)
