1. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks? By Natalie Tracey
2. My project had one aim, which was to promote an artist through a variety of 3 products: a music video, digipack and magazine advert suitable for NME magazine. In the real world these products would all be produced by the same record company marketing team and would use similar source material to give uniform and coherent identity to update and develop the already established style/identity for the artist. Therefore to be effective there has to be similar use of media language in all 3 products. All 3 products must carry similar connotations.
3. I have used similar language connotations in my magazine advert and digipack use the same location and costumes and text design in order for the audience to form an association between the two. The bright colours and outside leafy location suggest a wild, quirky artist, who is focused on presenting themselves by creating a unique style. The variety of shots, including a close up and mid shot, allows the audience to see the style of the artist and begins to fulfill a personal identification and motif for the audience. The body language suggests sexuality and the CD design with the direct eye contact makes a closer connection with the audience.
4. Here you can see that I have used the same location to continue the wild theme and further highlight the unique image of my artist. The slightly revealing costumes and clothing connote sexuality and promiscuity and attract audience. Additionally the bright colours contrast with the mise-en-scene of low key lighting to connote a sort of psychotic, crazy personality. It implies she acts different when performing to real life.
5. Throughout my products I used similar make up. I chose bright, sparkly, unusual designs to further express my quirky artist and to develop a motif that audiences will begin associate with my artist. I made Zara central in all shots and used many close ups and extreme close ups in both my music video and print products to make it more personal to the audience and highlight the emotion and personality of the artist.
6. Representation The artist I have created represents the young female audience. I have constructed a sexual and quirky style, the representation created by an artist to their fans is vital to achieve commercial success. My chosen pop genre and female solo artist is mainstream and appeals to many audiences. The audience may like an artist due to their songs, however, they could also be fan due to their style, performance and sex appeal. Therefore, I chose to use revealing outfits, create a quirky, noticeable style and have a performance side to the music video around the fire. The unusual style is consistent throughout all my products through the connotations of the mise-en-scene such as colours, lighting and location. The uses and gratifications theory states discusses how users proactively search for media that will not only meet a given need but enhance knowledge, social interactions and diversion as the artist fulfills the audience need for personal identification and belonging to youth cultures.
