Why OER?

Open Education Resources are great for everyone!  Any sharing of knowledge has to be seen as a good thing, right?  We share knowledge all the time in order to help others have that information too:  I love your dress. You’re blowing my mind. Where did you get it?  Do you like my pretty dress? I got it at the mall.  And that is helpful information, but what if you wanted to share something to everyone, forever that could help them for the rest of their lives and educate millions of people?   3. 3. BENEFITS TO OERS AND WHY YOU SHOULD WANT TO SHARE!  Your students will think you are a rock star for helping them afford your classes. Student retention and completion could go through the roof if you remove the barrier of high priced books.  You already spent your time and energy on designing some resource that rocks(and we thank you)! Why make someone recreate the wheel. Just let them spread your love and mad skills by giving it a CC license.  OERs can and do span the entire world including places you will probably never get to see. But you can touch the lives of people in those places by making the OER you created accessible to them.  People like choices!!! OERs provide different ways at coming at an issue that might just make more sense in their mind. If someone has to learn about cell division, why not incorporate several OER examples that explain it in varying ways until they finally wrap their minds around it?

BEST BENEFIT EVER!  KNOWLEDGE SHOULD BE SHARED IN ORDER FOR IT TO GROW!  You are brilliant (or at least people tell you that)  You may not be the expert, buy you know your stuff  You are savvy in finding resources that help those around you  You are compassionate about learning being barrier free  You are creative and a never-ending source of information  Others in the world are just like you and value their strengths in these areas  Ideas and information that is restricted is fairly useless  OERs magnify all these attributes by allowing us to create, share, use, borrow, remix, reinvent, tweak, and give credit to all the knowledge that is just waiting to be used and passed along.

OK, BUT WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SO HARD?  It takes a lot of time…that you don’t have…and that costs someone money  Everyone thinks they are an expert about something, but what if they….well….aren’t and the information isn’t really all that accurate? Who reviews OERs?  You spent all your time on creating something awesome only to find out your institution retains the copyright on it! Seriously not fair!  Accessibility for all can sometimes be an exhausting process and takes even more time and determination (ex: a colorful diagram is lost on the colorblind)  Keeping it all current and in format that will last forever takes extra time and patience. When something in the world changes, you need to hold yourself accountable for updating your materials – nobody likes an out-of-date resource.
