Juan Enrique in his TED Talk introduces the notion of the “digital tattoo” in analogy with the
common tattoo that we all know. A tattoo is a clearly identifiable sign that we use to define
ourselves, consequently giving a particular image which allows others to recognise us. It can be
seen as an expression of our identity. The “digital tattoo” is similar; it is a trace of our identity
except that it is not in the physical world but it in the virtual world. Like the tattoo, it allows other
people to identify us but also like a real tattoo it is very hard or impossible to delete. We “craft” our
own digital tattoo each time we talk about ourselves on the internet, write something or search for
something. The most common example of a “digital tattoo” are comments or posts made through
our use of social media but includes all aspects of our digital footprint (online purchases etc...).
