Music isn 't just what I do, it 's who I am, and who I've always been. I play twelve instruments.
Some fluently, some only a singular note or, maybe a song. This all started out in sixth grade when I
could not decide what instrument was best for me. I started out my first two months of middle
school by switching from instrument to instrument. I began with the oboe, and a week later, I
changed to percussion. Only then, did I attempt to play all of the brass instruments–– and I mean all
of them–– trumpet, french horn, tuba, trombone, and baritone, you name it, and I've probably played
it. Next, I moved on to all of the woodwinds, flutes, clarinets, and all of the saxophones. Again, I
cycled through the percussion instruments once again. Finally, I decided that I would rather play
notes on a staff than beat something with a stick. I was forced, by my very irritated band teacher, to
pick one of the two that I was better at, the alto saxophone or the trumpet. Two completely different
musical instruments in two completely different musical families. Of course, as an indecisive twelve
year old, I could not pick. Mr. Deneen, a woodwind player himself, chose the alto saxophone.
The alto saxophone has stuck with me for many years–– six, to be exact. My sixth grade year I
became really good at playing my saxophone. I went from indecisiveness to first chair in a matter of
weeks. In fact, I was so talented that I was moved up into the eighth grade band as a sixth grader.

perceives can be shockingly different. Producers of media can do everything possible to force
audiences to experience their work in the way they want them to, but in the end they still take away
many different meanings even within the same audience. Stuart Hall outlines this in his encoding
and decoding model. One of the most apparent examples of this is the television show South Park.
The television show South Park is a media text with the producers' preferred meaning of being
decoded as joke or as being satire, but many audience members take an oppositional stance of taking
it seriously. This is clear from the examples of controversy when South Park aired episodes focused
on Scientology, red–headed people, and Islam. Through these examples it is demonstrated that the
producers of media have less power compared to the audience in determining the meaning of media.

It's Only a Game – Isn't It? A small group of people sat around a ouija board expecting nothing to
happen. A few nervous giggles were exchanged amongst each other. The laughter quickly stopped
when the planchette stopped moving and the room became cold; the air turned thick and heavy.
Something entered the space, a feeling of distress surrounded the group. They became paranoid, and

FOX gave them $2,000 to make a video portfolio that he could send as a Christmas card to other
company executives to pitch the idea of the show. "I did the animation using nothing more then
construction paper cutouts," Parker says, "and we both improvised the dialogue, screaming
obscenities at each other in my basement for hours while my mom was baking fudge upstairs

forward thinking players of their respective eras. Musicians hold jazz pedigree and genealogy in

compositions performed by previous masters. Pianos ability to play melody and harmony together

after battling cancer and a muscular–skeletal disorder, J.J. Johnson passed away, leaving behind a

Johnson was 11 years old, his mother, Nina, sent him to piano lessons, and he briefly played the
baritone saxophone at school. At the age of 14, J.J. Johnson's classmates wanted to be in a band and

Addie Parker. Charlie led a lonely childhood which resulted from his parents separation in 1927
when Charlie was just 7 years old. His father was never around much following the separation.
Their house however was just a short walk from Kansas City's entertainment district which attracted
Charlie while growing up. This was to be where Charlie would find his place in the world.

To support himself Charlie washed dishes at a local food joint, where he met Buddy Fleet, who was
the one who tutored Charlie in playing the saxophone. Charlie would then return to Kansas City due
to the death of his father and stayed home for about a half a year while playing in a small band there.
Then in late 1939 Charlie joined back up with McShann and moved back to Harlem, where Charlie
would meet Dizzie Gillespie. Gillespie would join Charlie and would start to work together and
develop a new form of jazz. While Charlie was experimenting with a number of different chords in a
jam session he discovered a new approach to improvisation. These new chord progressions and the
ever emerging sounds of Harlem, bebop was born.
Parker would eventually need a break from New York City and decided to travel to California where
he would travel for a couple years. It was during this trip to the west coast that he would get heavier
in to drugs and alcohol, specifically heroin which he used as his inspiration. It was while in Los
Angeles performing that Charlie would suffer a nervous breakdown, for which he was confined to a
hospital bed. He was released in 1947 and returned to New York, where he formed a quintet with
Miles Davis and others. Parker would once again tire of New York City and head to Europe for a
couple of years, where he would encounter a lot of devoted fans and he also did numerous
recordings.

Jazz is a genre of music in which improvisation is typically an important part. Jazz has had a major
influence on most popular music genres in the 20th century such as rock, hip–hop, Latin and the list
goes on. There's a genre of jazz for every single individual out there which makes it such an
interesting topic and from there branches another very popular subgenre of jazz called Bebop.
Bebop is a style of jazz which was developed in the 1940s. Bebop had the effect of removing jazz
from the mainstream of popular tunes which was mainly for dancing and focused on music that was

So many of our songs rely on the invention of bebop. This isn't only art. This is a part of our history.
I think that all his pie ces are so wonderfully constructed and each piece has its own uniqueness but
at the same time are so easy to identify as Parkers compositions as they all at the end of the day,
have the same effort put into them and has Parkers signature alto sax. The history behind the pieces,
Parkers story of how his father left and his rough childhood send shivers down my spine and I think
that everyone can learn a lesson from this musical hero. You can be anything your pursuit to be but
should be wise as well. Parker followed his dreams and what he wanted to do but because he didn't
make smart choices with his life, it ended too soon. I think without Parkers story and music; the
world would be different. Without his tragic passing, the legend would have lived on and continued

. The underlying theme of the film, however, is that it is the responsibility of parents and guardians
to protect their children from what they deem inappropriate, and that censorship of anything
(particularly in movies and TV) is simply a parental tool for escaping blame. In the climax of the
film the parents sing a song whose words are meant to blame Canada before anyone blames the
parents for their poor parenting skills. It is also seen that a couple abandons their baby in the

South Park's situation, the writers use logic and evidence to express their opinions on controversial
issues, and people think that it should be censored. Just because the show uses morally questionable

Another huge controversy South Park has created is their depiction of religion. South Park has
parodied almost every major religion so it is understandable that many people are offended. In the
episode, Trapped in the Closet, South Park basically calls Scientology a global scam. The LDS
church responded to the episode, All About Mormons, by calling it a gross portrayal of the LDS
church. The creators of South Park claim that any topic is subject to ridicule, but, because of the
Jyllands–Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy, South Park has censored images of Muhammad.
While they have not been able to ridicule Islam directly, – which is something that the creators never
planned to do until this controversy arose – they still mock the censorship controversy itself.
Christianity is, by far, the most often parodied religion in South Park. Arguably, the most offensive
parody South Park has done involving Christianity is the depiction of Jesus. In South Park, Jesus has
his own talk show and appears to be just ordinary. As a recurring character, South Park's Jesus has
engaged in acts of speaking profanity, violence, and has been shown with the inability to perform his
miracles. Critics of the show say that these controversial portrayals confuse and corrupt children.

While "One O'Clock Jump" has more similarities to swing it is still an example of modernism. In
Coleman Hawkins "One O'Clock Jump" one can notice the more similarities with swing, compared
to "Body and Soul," however, one can still hear a more detailed portrayal. The song has more flow
and more beats than swing usually has. Thus, use of more beats is part of the new technique that
Coleman Hawkins used. The use of the new techniques shows how one can see modernism in "One
O'Clock Jump." However, due to the similarities to swing one would not necessary have to see this
song of Hawkins as part of bebop or modernism.
Another song of Hawkins that not necessary has to be seen as modernism is "Every Man For
Himself." In "Every Man For Himself" there is again a faster pace. While one could still call it
swing one could say how the faster pacing made it part of modernism. Yet one can again argue how
the similarities to swing, still made it swing and a new term as bebop would not have been

As Hawkins went to Europe he did not experience the rapid urbanization that was happening in the
United States. Although, he did keep several records of American artists, so he could still listen to
the changes that were happening. As well as the techniques he learned in Europe, would eventually
lead to the new techniques that he used in the United States. Thus, while he did not experience the
changes in the thirties he did keep up to date to these changes, and was part of the changes that were

Comic–Con has given us a lot of good stuff this year. Surprisingly, it didn 't really give us anything
from the Star Wars Universe in terms of live–action movie stuff. We expected another trailer for
Rogue One, but that never actually happened. Either way, we got some great stuff from DC, Marvel,
and the other companies that also happen to make films. Also, there were comics there. But SDCC
doesn 't really care about comics and more, do they? Hell no. In anycase, here are the best movies
