12. Innovation, SEN and beyond
The curriculum freedoms now in place for ICT from September 2012 mean
that innovation is possible more than ever before
Secondary and Special Schools are using :
iPads, Kindles, DSi and hand helds (BYOD)
Visualisers
IWB’s
Twitter
Facebook
Learning Platforms
Games Based Learning
Blogging and digital
Raspberry Pi and Arduino
App development – Google App Inventor
Augmented Reality - QR admissions
13. Mobile Devices
• Mobile communication is now the single most
important activity many YP rely on to give them
identity, connection and a sense of community.
• It is important for all those with a duty of care for
young people to understand how new mobile
platforms are influencing relationships and
behaviour both within and outside the learning
environment.
• Mobile and tablet technology requires robust
infrastructure
• Mobile and tablet technology not as easy to deploy
as conventional PC and Mac based suites.
If you innovate with mobile / tablets or BYOD then make
sure you plan to teach how to use them effectively. We
can’t assume safe practice by osmosis.
14. The Cloud
You don’t pay for it so anything can
happen – Data Handling Policy
Cloud storage solutions – Seek
advice of your LA / Northern Grid or
local support network
Cloud based applications – Who’s
data is it anyway? A policy in place
to ensure that sensitive data is not
placed on the cloud.
15. The Social network cannot be ignored
Twitter
Facebook
Foursquare
Instagram
Youtube
LinkedIn
Pinterest
Last FM
– I’m eating a large #donut
– I like like donuts and so does my wife
– This is where I eat donuts
– Here’s a polaroid of me eating a donut
– Look at me eating donut
– My skills include donut eating
– Here’s a donut recipe
– Now listening to ‘donuts’
However it needs to be done in a controlled way!
17. Areas of weakness
•
•
•
•
•
Mobile technology
E-Safety Responsibility
Monitoring and reporting
Staff training
Policies that reflect
true practice
18. What can I do then Dan?
• Ensure policies are up to date for students AND staff. They should
also be fit for purpose.
• Embrace technology, set up pilot projects
• Innovate with a purpose and identify impact on learning
• Pupil voice activities – what content do the students want and how
do they want it delivered
• Look at a 5 year action plan
• Create a new school ICT Vision – Its not about the kit its what you
do with it
• SWGfL – 360 degree safe audiy
PROMOTE better use of existing technology such as IWB, Kahn
Academy, Learning Platform and so on.

Editor's Notes
This story today will be about protection, relationships, risk and the technology which is changing them. We all want to protect our kids, Ive got two and one on the way…
KID proofing…..From when they are little, bashing into things such as tables, Child proofing the house
Kids love playing,
Playing and building relationships,Relationships are complex and even adults struggle with them
We want the kids to experience as many things as possible
BUT Our attitudes to risk have changed, risk assessment, firemen going inotbuidlings, school trips, annectdote: Risk assessmenent for Surrey safe drive stay alive
Study shows 70% of kids don’t go outside enough. Why do you think that is…pauseCircle of mobility restricted by parentsCommunication Technology also has an effect
Think back. Do you remember a time when you felt this. 2 mins. A toy? A place? An event/This is what my kids are in awe of at this week – an elastic band
Mobile communication is now the single most important activity many vulnerable YP rely on to give them identity, connection and a sense of community. Consequently, staff working in PRUs (and elsewhere) must be given ongoing support and hands-on training to better understand how interacting with new social media and mobile platforms create positive opportunities but, equally, very real challenges for vulnerable young people.

I suppose to end I would like to share this quote…Dave Grohl winning Grammy. Highlights that all of this is NOT about the technology It is about relationships, risks and education. Our kids need support. We need to keep up with the technology however keeping up its effect on the students relationships and social awareness is even more a prioroty.
