About Hersonissos MNC
• Located in the Northeast part of Heraklion Prefecture just 23 klm from Heraklion Airport
• After Kalikratis Plan Hersonissos Municipality merge the Municipalities of Gouves, Episkopi &
Malia
• It covers a total area of 271.580 square klms
• Coastline of over 38 klms
• Winter Period Permanent Population: 27,080
• Permanent Population summer: 52,337
• 22 Municipal / Local Communities & 52 villages

Tourism in Hersonissos
• It started to develop tourism in the early 70's
• 1973 the first hotel was build
• Increased the flow of tourists in the late 70's to early 80's
• Tourism development has been the main pole of the area by
facilitating the transition from agricultural production and
economy in service delivery
• The distance from Heraklion Airport was one of the main
reasons
• Beautiful beaches

• Last 7 years almost 19% - 20% of the total tourists expenditures in Greece carried out in Crete
• 17% - 18% of total room nights in Greece were in Crete
• Almost 1 billion Euro were the tourists expenditures who visited Crete from July to August 2011
• The Heraklion Airport arrivals’ for July & August are more than in Athens Airport(El. Venizelos)
• 25% of total number of hotels in Crete located in Municipality of Hersonissos

Snaps of Projects on Progress
Research : “Assessment of tourism’s role in the production structure and economy of
Hersonissos Municipality based on the Regional Tourism Satellite Accounts
approach”
The recording of expenditure of tourists that choose Hersonissos Municipality as their destination is set in
the core of this research, in order to analyze the role of tourism in the entire economic and production
fasma of the municipality in reference.
Main goal: collect statistical data of various nature, that will allow the creation of a comprehensive data
base for the constitution of a Tourism Observatory at a local level.
Promotions: “Discover the Unknown Hersonissos through the eyes of our guests”
Run competitions at big tourism portals like Zoover, Trivago focusing in specific Markets.
Why should we pick you to become a travel reporter to show us the unknown Hersonissos?
During their stay, the winners have to place different posts, tweets, photos and videos on the web and
write a travelogue about the unknown Hersonissos
