This is the standard VMware VDI product presentation for prospective customers. It was written for the VMware VDI launch in Q1 ‘08. It is applicable for more technical audiences where there’s an interest in VMware VDI and Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) specifically. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with running the presentation in slide show mode in advance of giving the presentation.
Structure of this slide deck is such that you can remove any of the sections if they are too long. Please be sure to do the following on this agenda slide: Your name and role within VMware. Many customers that have put virtualization into practice in their company, particularly in their data centers, are now coming to us inquiring about how this technology can be leveraged for their desktops. Now let’s talk more specifically at how customers go from traditional PCs to a fully centralized VMware VDI solution.
Traditional PCs, as we know, provide some key benefits for the end users. The desktops may be configured just the way they want them. However, IT more and more is considering the challenges associated with maintaining traditional PCs. Here are some of the most compelling reasons driving organizations to look at centralizing their desktops.
Now, many organizations have already or are considering a straight server-based computing (SBC) route for their desktops. SBC provides many of the benefits of central administration, namely updating and patching desktop systems form a single location, securing confidential information in the data center, etc. However, terminal services and blade PCs as the key traditional SBC technologies have had their own set of limitations: SBC: Applications don’t easily fit in and often need to be modified or they don’t run at all in terminal services solutions like Citrix Presentation Server. Also because the applications are shared, the desktops are not as reliable. If one system goes down, all users are affected. And if the systems can be shared, there’s risk of users accessing information they shouldn’t. For end-users, they want the ability to maintain their own desktop assigned to them, make changes to the wallpaper and otherwise manage their own PC BladePCs: Provide the benefits of an individual desktop for each end user but at a higher cost. BladePCs as a SBC technology are not ideal because you need to dedicate a blade in the data cetner for every user.
Enter Virtual Desktop Infrastructure technology or VDI. Many organizations can realize the benefits of server-based computing (SBC) technology because VDI is a form of SBC. The difference is organizations can benefit from the efficiencies of virtualizing their desktops in the data center. VDI delivers completely isolated desktops to end users that are not shared. And there are no application compatibility problems. Many organizations are considering VDI, but they should really be only looking at one vendor, VMware. And here’s why…
VMware is the only proven provider of VDI technology for many reasons: VMware VDI is based on VMware Infrastructure technology that has been in place since 1998. And VMware customers have been running VDI for several years. Organizations that go with VMware for their VDI implementations can work with a single vendor that has completely integrated the server and desktop technologies in the data center so that the management, resources and support can flow smoothly across an IT organization. VMware Infrastructure 3 comes with industry proven capabilities that can be leveraged for desktops to make them more reliable, scalable and secure.
With VMware VDI, our vision is a solution that brings together the best of all worlds – distributed PCs, terminal services style server based computing, and virtualization. A VDI desktop can have all the benefits of a traditional PC (e.g. familiar end user experience), plus the flexibility and control that comes from putting desktops in a datacenter… as well as the benefits that come from VMware virtualization – high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, etc. ----------------------- One other point: Vista upgrades prompting many organizations to rethink their desktop strategy and we think VDI offers a compelling alternative to yet another Wintel upgrade cycle.
We couldn’t help ourselves with this additional quote from Kane County. We have many other customers running VDI. VDI has been run by VMware customers since as early as 2002. However, this quote shows how many customers see desktop virtualization as the standard practice in their organization for reducing the desktop management burden and gaining control over unmanaged PCs. The latest study from Merrill Lynch further underscores how VMware is preferred for desktop virtualization deployments among CIOs surveyed.
VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) delivers an end-to-end desktop virtualization solution that enables organizations to centralize desktops and improve management and control using VMware’s proven virtualization platform (VI3). Individual end users benefit from the ability to access their familiar corporate desktop from any location We’re going to walk you through the components of VDI and then discuss how your organization can benefit from VMware VDI.
VMware VDI is an end-to-end solution for any company, large or small, with these components: VMware Infrastructure 3: The VMware VDI solution leverages proven VMware ESX and Virtual Center technology to consolidate desktop environments on to servers in the data center. [Click] VMware Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM): Administrators run VMware’s enterprise-class connection broker for connecting remote clients to centralized desktops and managing virtual desktop environments. [Click] Clients: Users can log into their centralized virtual desktop images from a Web browser or by using the VMware VDI Windows-native client. [Click] Microsoft Active Directory is required to run the VMware Virtual Desktop Manager software. VMware VDM is completely integrated with Active Directory. Users are able to authenticate to VMware VDM using the same credentials used to logon to a physical PC in the corporate domain. VMware VDM is designed for enterprise deployment. The service can be scaled horizontally to accommodate large numbers of users and to provide high availability in the case of a failure. VMware VDM can run inside a virtual machine and take full advantage of VMHA.
VMware VDI leverages the market’s proven virtualization platform, VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3). The VMware Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) software is tightly integrated with VI3 to make management between servers and desktops seamless. There’s no need to retrain IT staff, since VMware VDI has the VI3 look and feel for consistent administration across desktops and servers in the data center. The support for the entire solution comes from a single vendor: VMware. With this end-to-end solution from VMware, companies can apply powerful server tools traditionally reserved for the data center servers to their desktop infrastructures. Disaster recovery – previously not a possibility for desktops - now can be configured using VMware VDI because the desktops are centralized and can leverage shared storage technology. The centralized desktop images can easily be moved from server to server because they are encapsulated into hardware independent virtual machines. Additionally, organizations can offer desktops a heightened level of business continuity, making use of VMware HA and DRS capabilities. IT can dynamically allocate desktop resources automatically using VI3 DRS. Running desktop VMs can be moved between servers without disrupting end-user activity. IT can overprovision desktop resources such as CPU and memory to optimize end user performance. No single point of failure: IT can install fully synchronized VDM servers and leverage VI3’s support for industry standard server load balancing. Virtual Desktop Manager components are designed to run independently across multiple servers for additional reliability.
VMware VDM is an enterprise-class virtual desktop management server. It is a key component of VDI because it manages the connections between the remote clients and their centralized desktops. We will spend some time in this presentation, covering the functionality of VMware VDM. First it’s designed for organizations large and small. Because it’s so tightly integrated with VI3, it has been designed to work in large scale deployments and to make use of VI3’s key features such as HA, DRS, backup, etc. Organizations can deploy a fault tolerant desktop infrastructure using VMware VDM’s robust technology for connection redundancy and reliability. Additionally, VI3 enables you to provide the same level of service to your desktops that you demand for your servers because desktops reside in your data center and can be backed up reliably. Organizations can keep desktops running even when server hardware goes down, and recover quickly from unplanned outages. They can also balance desktop computing resources automatically as user needs and application loads change over time.
Flexible Provisioning: Deploy individual desktops for each user or create persistent and non-persistent desktop pools Here we’re going to cover the ability to assign individual desktops to each end user. There is a static 1-to-1 relationship between user and their virtual desktop.
Also, VMware VDI offers &quot;Smart pooling&quot; capabilities: More easily manage large numbers of centralized desktops to automatically assign and provision new desktops as needed. Smart Pooling helps organizations in a number of ways. We’ll go into the two options for smart pooling: persistent and non-persistent pools. The overall benefits include more rapid desktop deployments, desktop policies for greater control, as well as easier management of many VDI desktops.
With non-persistent pools, the desktop allocation is to any desktop in pool. The desktop is returned to pool for re-allocation at logoff. This capability is particularly important to organizations with transactional workers in cases such as call centers. The users can work with a standard desktop template. IT can more efficiently manage the number of desktops needed for a given pool.
With Persistent Pools, the desktop allocation is to any desktop in pool. A dedicated desktop is provided for subsequent connections. This case is often useful to organizations that want to ensure all desktops users work from a standard corporate template when their VDI desktop is first assigned. This capability helps organizations deploy VDI rapidly and ensures consistency across desktop templates from the beginning. Yet, end users get to keep their desktop from that point forward.
VMware VDM 2 is tightly integrated with Active Directory and AD authentication is a pre-requisite for VDM. Typically customer already maintain users in the Active Directory. VMware VDM references these user accounts instead of relying on an internal directory or database of users. There are many benefits of this approach: VMware VDM supports authentication against complex multi domain configurations. Many customers have user accounts in different domains and use domain trusts to authorize access to resources in the Windows infrastructure. VMware VDM supports these sophisticated configurations by default. User management processes do not have to be disrupted by implementing VMware VDM. These include creating user accounts, resetting passwords and changing NT permissions for users to groups. For example, if the process for resetting a user password is that the user calls the helpdesk, this can continue without having to retrain the helpdesk administrators. User account policies, such as password complexity or expiration are also retained. Users in VMware VDM can reuse any existing group policy in the domain. By referencing domain accounts directly, VMware VDM does not need to use third-party or inbuilt replication systems. This means there is no risk of data becoming out of sync and removes any computational overhead of user-data replication. It is possible to configure strong two-factor authentication using SecurID, in addition to AD authentication. Two-factor authentication is often a requirement for users who access the VDI environment from an un-trusted client or over an un-trusted network.
VMware VDM encrypts the connection data stream by default. An SSL connection is established between the VDM Client and VDM Connection Server over HTTPs. The desktop connection is tunneled through this connection to give maximum security to data. If the VDM Security Server is deployed in a DMZ the SSL connection is established between VDM Client and VDM Security Server. It is possible ‘bypass’ the SSL tunnel and establish a direct RDP connection. This is typically not recommended.
The VDM Client is an application used to connect clients to VDM Connection server and to virtual desktops. The user enters the URL of the VDM Connection Server and their AD credentials into the VDM Client. Alternatively, end users may use a browser to access their VDI desktop. VMware VDI can be enhanced using thin clients. Thin clients can reduce the TCO of a VMware VDI deployment because the ongoing support and maintenance costs of thin clients is generally less than that of traditional PCs. VMware VDM 2 support XPe and Linux clients, which provides support for many of the thin clients on the market. The WYSE S10 and V10L devices are also supported.
Let us not forget the end user. End users want a familiar PC experience: they want their complete desktop. They won’t be satisfied with a solution that doesn’t allow them to perform installations or configure their PC the way they like it. VMware customers have found the transition to a VDI solution to be smooth because end users use the same (virtual) desktop, just running over a remote connection. VMware VDI coexists within corporate environments seamlessly. Organizations can run off-the-shelf, legacy or custom apps with no modifications as well as leverage existing desktop management tools. VMware VDI includes support for USB devices on the local client such as local printers, storage, PDAs, etc. And unique to VDI compared to other shared application technologies (e.g. terminal services), VDI desktops are complete isolated desktops. If one desktop goes down, the other users aren’t affected. VDI provides the flexibility of accessing the centralized desktop image from any device anywhere.
Deploy desktops in minutes instead of weeks through automated desktop provisioning. Standardize the deployment process by maintaining a library of pre-built desktop images in VMware VirtualCenter that can be called on quickly when a new office or group of users are needed.
Customers like IQOR/IRMC have found VDI enables them to respond to business needs more quickly because it’s so quick to deploy VDI desktops. VDI customers leverage VDM smart pooling capabilities to maintain a template image and rapidly provision new desktops using the same standardized template. End users can then maintain their individual desktop for subsequent logins or the desktops can return to the pool for other end users on the next login.
VMware VDI customers are finding that while the ROI is not a traditional 6 month savings on hardware like a data center virtualization purchase, year over year cost savings such as support and maintenance make up the difference. For example, customers are finding desktop support personnel is no longer need onsite. Thin clients or repurposed PCs allow organizations to improve desktop lifecycles as well as reduce client hardware maintenance costs and energy requirements Energy savings can also be significant as the number of desktops add up in an organization. A recent study by Butler Group 2007 suggests the individual desktop savings can be anywhere between $59 and $164 per PC per year. Customers are experiencing lower client deployment costs with VDI because there’s no need to make onsite visits and desktops can be fully configured in the central datacenter from a standard template. Now let’s talk about how customers are using VMware VDI
Many ask what is VDI? Is it a product or solution? VDI is both a product you can order from VMware as well as a solution in practice in many organizations. The glue to make it happen in many ways is the connection broker. VMware Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) helps the clients navigate from a front end client to a desktop virtual machine running on the back-end in the host data center. The front-end client, with VDI, doesn’t have to run anything more than a remote protocol to access their virtual desktop on the back-end. Organizations more and more are looking to replace their desktops with VDI desktops that are centrally administered. Additionally, organizations use VDI for transactional workers in call center or business process outsourcing cases where end users might work from a pool of desktop images. VDI also makes desktop disaster recovery a possibility with shared storage technology.
Centralized Desktop Management: Use VMware VDI to replace traditional PCs with virtual desktops that run on servers in the data center, making them easier to control and manage. Administrators can provision new virtual desktops in minutes, and give end-users their own complete, unmodified desktop environments, eliminating the need for retraining and application sharing. Transactional User Management: VMware VDI is ideal for delivering cost-effective desktop services to fixed-function workers at branch offices, call centers and other locations. Controlling access to confidential data is easier because all virtual desktops and their data can be stored inside the firewall. Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity: VMware VDI extends the proven power of VMware Infrastructure 3 to the desktop, and VMware VDI customers enjoy the reliability, data protection and disaster recovery capabilities that have traditionally been available only for server applications. Features such as automated failover ensure high availability for virtual desktops, and you can leverage shared storage to back up your desktops, just as you would with server data. Site-wide disaster recovery mechanisms ensure rapid restoration of service after an unplanned outage—without the need for duplicate hardware.
Kindred Healthcare is an example of a VMware VDI customer running VDI for thin computing benefits. This implementation gives Kindred the flexibility of providing nurses and doctors with access to sensitive patient records from anywhere in the hospital. VDI helped Kindred achieve compliance with HIPAA because the data is locked up and access is maintained from a central location. Kindred’s implementation takes advantage of their overall VMware Infrastructure deployment on the backend and is more efficient, requiring less power and centralized management of the front-end clients. Most importantly, their end users are happy with this VDI solution too. Let’s talk next about how you can get started on the road to deploying VMware VDI.
With the launch of VMware VDM 2, we have also launched new pricing. VMware VDM comes as part of an overall VDI Bundle as well as Standalone. This chart is designed to help customers understand what to order when they’re ready to deploy VMware VDI: For new customers and existing customers that want to have a VDI only desktop deployment that’s separate from their VI3 infrastructure, the VDI Bundle includes all of the components needed for an implementation. VI3 is included along with VMware VDM. The VI3 software is fully functioning and licensed for concurrent desktop users. So, it’s priced quite effectively for organizations that want to run a lot of desktop users off VI3. The VDM Standalone offering is applicable to existing VI3 customers that simply want to add on desktop capability to their infrastructure. VDM is the only component offered in this package. Customers would need to confirm that they have existing capacity and licenses on their VI3 servers. VDM Standalone comes at an effective price point for the broker component itself. Customers can purchase VI3 separately, which doesn’t include the cost effective pricing of desktops but does give them the capability of running desktops and servers interchangeably on the same VI3 systems.

VMware VDI is providing organizations with unprecedented control and manageability over their desktops. And most importantly the end users are retaining the freedom they need of running a complete desktop. All from the leader in virtualization technology, VMware, running in 20,000 companies worldwide.
There are approximately 550m corporate PCs. This number is growing at around 10% per annum. Server based computing (terminal services, virtual desktop and blade PCs) represents about 1-2% of that market (Citrix claims to have 50m licenses but many of those are not deployed and a large percentage of the remainder is used to deliver applications to conventional distributed desktops). Our objective is to make VDI an attractive way for organizations to deliver PC services. We think many organizations are tired of being held accountable for a service (desktop) that they do not control end to end; we think many organizations want to deliver desktops as a service to an sla and we think the way they will do that is by centralizing the desktops in the datacenter. We recognize that we’re not there today. A number of organizations are starting to use VDI as an enterprise solution but most are using VDI to address a small number of use cases: offshore developers, call centers, disaster recovery / business continuity, users’ whose applications won’t run under Citrix, and users who need access to legacy desktop platforms such as Windows 2000 (note that VDM doesn’t currently support access to Windows 2000). We are delighted that customers are using our product in this way and we will of course continue to support them when they do that. We don’t expect every organization to move to 100% VDI solution today but we want to get to a point where it is something they seriously consider when they look at their desktop strategy. Note that we deliberately don’t say desktops in the vision because we recognize the solution must encompass desktops and laptops. We recognize that, in many countries such as the US and Japan, laptop sales are starting to exceed desktop sales; we have a solution for that too; we’ll come back to that later.
