TO TELL YOU WHAT
TO YOU WILL BE
STUDYING IN THE
YEAR AHEAD AND
SOME OF THE
ACTIVITIES AND
CLUBS GOING ON
IN SCHOOL.
YOUR FIRST HOMEWORK

 I want you to collect loads of pictures on any
  historical theme and bring them to class.
 You are going to use these to create your
  own personal book cover
HISTORY CLUBS
   There will be two clubs run in the history department
    every week.

   On Tuesdays at lunchtime there will be a homework and
    activities club. Come and join us and you can watch
    Horrible Histories TV shows, read and get extra help to
    complete your homework.
   Every Thursday lunchtime the Crime History Club meet to
    find out more about some of the most famous criminals
    and crimes from history as well as a look at how we’ve
    punished or even tortured criminals.

   To find out more about these go to room 27 at 1.30pm on
    Tuesday or Thursday.
VISITS
 The history department will be running a
  number of visits during the year.
 We’ll be taking a group of students to the
  Horrible Histories’ Rotten Roman’s show at the
  theatre in November.
 We’ve organised a trip to London for our year 8
  and 9 students to visit loads of historic sites.
 We’re hoping to run a trip to Normandy in
  France later in the year
 We’re hoping to visit Beeston Castle and other
  sites during the year.
HOMEWORK
Your teacher will give you a special sheet with loads of
projects and activities for you to choose from. You need to
hand in at least two by the end of our first half-term and two
more by Christmas. These will be reviewed with your
teacher and recorded. You will be given a range of rewards
for good work.

Your teacher will occasionally need to set homework relating
to work in your lesson in addition to these activities.

You can get extra help to finish homework at the school
homework club or in the History Activities Club which will run
every Tuesday lunchtime. There will be NO EXCUSES!
HOW WILL WE REWARD YOUR GOOD WORK?

 1) Positive comments/ use of marking stampers
 2) Use of stickers on work to award house
  points
 3) Postcards home if you complete an
  exceptional piece of work.
 4) Achievement certificates will be given to
  outstanding students as a recognition of their
  work.
 5) A letter home from the Director of History
  and Headteacher for any students who
  continuously produce outstanding work.

   The story of Romulus and Remus. The growth of the Roman Empire / Why was the Roman army
    so successful?
   What have the Romans done for us? / What happened in Pompeii?
   A trail around a Roman town?

   Life in Medieval England
   The story of the Battle of Hastings/ The Feudal System/ Domesday Book/ How did castles
    develop?
   What was life like for a medieval peasant?
   Design a booklet to describe life in a medieval town .
   Why was the church so important to medieval peasants?
   The story of the murder of Thomas Beckett
   What was the Black Death?
   Why did the Peasants Revolt against their king?
All of your assessments will be stored in a special folder with your reviews and
target setting work.

You will be given a target sheet to put on the front of your folder, a level descriptor
and assessment tracking sheets within their folder.
For every assessment you will check each others’ work
and review your own assessments before your teacher
marks it and records your level.

You will use these scores in future target setting and
review activities.

You will also complete regular self-reviews and keep
these in your folder.
FINALLY

 We want you to enjoy studying history but
  you need to be willing to work hard, take part
  in lessons and try out new ways of learning.
 Department detentions will be held every
  week for anyone who doesn’t meet
  expectations for homework, behaviour or
  effort.

  • 11. All of your assessments will be stored in a special folder with your reviews and target setting work. You will be given a target sheet to put on the front of your folder, a level descriptor and assessment tracking sheets within their folder.
  • 12. For every assessment you will check each others’ work and review your own assessments before your teacher marks it and records your level. You will use these scores in future target setting and review activities. You will also complete regular self-reviews and keep these in your folder.
  • 13. FINALLY  We want you to enjoy studying history but you need to be willing to work hard, take part in lessons and try out new ways of learning.  Department detentions will be held every week for anyone who doesn’t meet expectations for homework, behaviour or effort.
