linen, while the poor wore whatever was available
 The belt around the waist was to make sure it wouldn’t fall
off, but it gave the impression you were wearing two

 Made of white wool and used up to 9 yards of material
 Since it was bulky, it was customary to wear it only state
occasions
 In the time of Augustus, he made it a law to always wear the

Not all togas were the same. Some togas marked social
status.
 Toga Virilis-a plain, unadorned toga made in off-white color
and worn by adult males
 Toga Praetexta-an off-white toga with a broad purple border
and worn by Senate
 Toga Pulla-an artificially whitened toga worn by candidates
for political office
 Toga Picta-a special all purple toga embroidered with gold
thread worn by a Roman general during a triumphal parade;
worn by Julius Caesar
