What is it? Personal Health Record  This is a record of a person’s health information which people can edit their own information to it including information on family health or other health related issues  It is stored online and viewed on a computer.  It might add medical claims received and doctor visit information. A health plan can add to it. It can include claims and other health history.
Why Bother? Safety Better Health Management So many doctors Public Health Implications Emergency Cases Need to know information
Current Reaseach Much research involved with patient centered care. The focus being that the PHR will center in on the individual’s health Other focuses are centered on the Privacy and protection HIPAA  “Who will own this data?”
Current Attempt Example Google:  Organize your health information all in one place Gather your medical records from doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies Share your information securely with a family member, doctors or caregivers Take charge of your health information
Problems No requirements Nothing forcing people to get one Not centralized The information is not all in one place No coordination Governing body needed to monitor  and protect
Conclusions We need this! EHRs are making these more of a reality every day Personal Health Records can help save lives Emergency situations May lead forward to personalized care Genetic components Better use of drugs Coordination and communication between providers Every doctor knows what each of his or her colleagues are doing
