2. Harassment
According to 354 IPC: Harassment is any
unwelcome conduct based on race, color, religion,
sex, national origin, age (40 or older), disability or
genetic information.
 23% of employees worldwide have experienced
violence or harassment in the workplace.
 Globally, 17.9% of employed men and women said
they had experienced psychological harassment in
their working life, and 8.5% had faced physical
harassment, with more men than women
experiencing this.

4. Quid Pro Quo Harassment
Examples:
• A supervisor requesting sexual favors as a condition
for hiring, promotion, advancement, or
opportunities.
• A manager threatening to terminate, transfer,
demote, or otherwise adversely affect an employee's
work life if sexual favors are not given or continued.

5. Hostile Work Environment
• A hostile work environment is created by a boss or
coworker whose actions, communication, or
behavior make doing your job impossible.
Examples:
Degrading Comments
• Sexual Propositions/ Jokes
• Vulgar Language
• Sexual Touching
• Embarrassing Questions
• Bullying

one habitually cruel to others who are
weaker.*

8. Third-Party Harassment
Behavior not found offensive by some employees can
facilitate an offensive environment for other
employees.
Example:
A group of employees talking about each other’s sex
lives in the presence of another person who feels very
uncomfortable about such discussions.

9. Discriminary Harassment

10. Mental Harassment
• Studies suggest that as many as 50% of employees
experience workplace harassment during their
employment, but only some report it.
• The offender would be booked under section 294 of
the Indian Penal Code and would be liable for an
imprisonment up to three years or with a fine or
both.

11. Sexual Harassment
Unwelcome, unwanted, or offensive sexual advances,
requests for sexual favors, and other verbal/ non
verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

13. What to do…
• Be assertive
• A complaint may be made verbally or in
writing.
• Keep a diary
• File civil or criminal charges
• Seek appropriate counseling

14. For the Supervisor...
• Set an example of respectful workplace behavior.
• Have a clear mechanism for reporting;
• Take immediate steps to stop inappropriate
behavior or conduct as it occurs or is reported.
• Handle investigations as discretely and
confidentially as possible.
• Be sensitive to the feelings of all involved.

15. Protecting Yourself
• Mind your business.
• Don’t talk about sex on the job.
• Never mix social life with job related discussions.
• Keep any compliments casual and fairly impersonal.
• Avoid jokes, words, phrases and gestures with sexual
meaning.
• Respect a person’s “personal space”.
• Do not respond to seductive behavior.
• Have a respectful behavior for all.
