JESUS – PROPHET, PRIEST AND KING
Among the roles that were to be assumed by Jesus
were the three great offices of prophet, priest and king. In
the earliest of Biblical dispensations, it seems that the
three positions were joined in the role that the patriarch
assumed in the family.
With the coming of the Mosaical dispensation these
duties were divided, the king was on the throne. The priest
was ministering at the altar. The prophet, with the Divine
message, was always at hand to teach, guide and rebuke.
However, there was in time an obvious failure of the repre-
sentatives to fulfill their duties. The Jews looked to the
Messiah to gather within himself the ideas which belonged
to these three great offices.
Jesus as the Messiah was to be a prophet. The word
in the Greek is prophetes “one who speaks forth or openly,
a proclaimer of a divine message. In the Septuagint it
translates the word roeh, a seer; hence, in general, the
prophet was one upon whom the Spirit of God rested.” It is
used of the Old Testament prophets. The prophet was one
who represented God to the people. When God’s plans for
redeeming man were threatened in the previous dispensa-
tion, He called such men as Joel, Hosea and Micah to be
His spokesmen.
Israel was chosen by God and was established as a
Theocracy. A theocracy is a form of government where
God is the true king. Clearly then, the prophet, as God’s
spokesman was the most important person in the commu-
nity. Jesus, the Messiah, was to be a prophet like Moses.
God told Moses, “I will raise them up a Prophet from
among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my
words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all
that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to
pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words
which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of
him” (Deut. 18:18, 19, KJV). This prophecy was fulfilled in
the coming of Jesus as testified to by the apostle Peter. In
the second sermon he preached he applied this prophecy
to Jesus in Acts 3:20, 22, 23 saying “and that He may
send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before,
21 "whom heaven must receive until the times of resto-
ration of all things, which God has spoken by the
mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
22 "For Moses truly said to the fathers, 'The LORD
your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from
your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, what-
ever He says to you. 23 'And it shall be that every soul
who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly de-
stroyed from among the people.'
Evidence that Jesus is that prophet is seen in the
testimony of God at the transfiguration of Jesus. Two men
appeared to talk with Jesus about His coming death. Those
two men were Moses and Elijah. In Matthew 17:5 we read,
“While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshad-
owed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which
said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased; hear ye him.” The time for listening to Moses
and Elijah (the Law and the prophets) has passed and now
we need to listen to Jesus, God’s Son.

A Thank-You Note
from the Jennings Family:
The Jennings family would like to thank you for
your graciousness and love shown during this dif-
ficult time. To have a church family like Deerfoot
for support is an extreme blessing. Thank you for
allowing us to use the building, for the food, for
the things we aren't even aware of, but most im-
portantly for your love and prayers. We cannot
repay you for what you have done and thank you
is not enough, but we want to at least show our
gratitude for all you have done.
Let’s remember those who have lost a
family member recently with prayers
and cards.
